The Discovery Science Center and Sacred Heart University each opened in the early 1960s with a vision of serving the region through education. Six decades later, the two came together in 2021 to reimagine the Science Center and strengthen its ability to inspire wonder and ignite creativity.

Already, the “new” SHU Discovery Science Center & Planetarium has become a modern science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) learning destination for families, K-12 students, children’s groups and tourists. On free-admission Bridgeport Wednesdays, a line often forms before the door opens, demonstrating both the popularity of the Science Center and the need for low-cost or free community access. Meanwhile, a new digital portal has extended our reach to schools in other states.

We have created a unique learning opportunity for SHU students in the Isabelle Farrington College of Education & Human Development who can work across grade levels and school districts, exposing them to diversity in culture, language and socio-economic backgrounds. In collaboration, Sacred Heart University and the Discovery Science Center are setting a new standard for the future of education.

Inspire the Next Generation

Sacred Heart University’s Discovery Science Center & Planetarium is drawing on SHU’s academic and research expertise, our relationships with area schools and our commitment to the community to provide a state-of-the-art facility that sparks imagination and learning. With your partnership through Now We Lead, we will:

Continuously refresh exhibits

Keeping exhibits up to date with the latest scientific discoveries, technology and topics requires ongoing investment. With your help, children (and adults) will discover something new and inspiring during every memorable visit to the Discovery Science Center.

Broaden STEAM programming

Programming has long been a strength of the Science Center, with topics from slime to crime and space to sound bringing STEAM to life for children. Now, through your generosity, we can launch both public and group programming even higher.

Expand access for underserved communities

In true Pioneer Spirit, your investment can support scholarships for innovative summer camps and other experiential programs for children and youth whose families cannot afford to pay. You can help extend the reach of our group programming to more schools, scouting organizations and youth groups from all areas of the community. You can help provide funding for busing, because free admission does not help schools that cannot afford to transport their students to the Center.
