Each Summer, Residential Life houses Sacred Heart students and interns from colleges across the globe as well as hosts conferences and camps on our beautiful campus. In order to provide the proper customer service to meet the needs of all parties, Residential Life hires current Sacred Heart students.

For Summer 2025, there are 12 available positions:

  • Summer RA I (9 positions)
  • Summer RA II (3 positions)

Term of Appointment & Compensation 

Summer Resident Assistant I (9 positions)

  • $3,000 stipend 
  • Rent-Free Housing for Period of Employment
  • Lunch is provided when Summer Camps and Conferences are in session
  • 1 week vacation (coordinated with supervisor)
  • May 14, 2025 to August 8, 2025

Summer Resident Assistant II (3 positions)

  • $3,500 stipend
  • Rent-Free Housing for Period of Employment
  • Lunch is provided when Summer Camps and Conferences are in session
  • 1 week vacation (coordinated with supervisor)
  • May 14, 2025 to August 22, 2025

If Summer RA is a residential student in fall 2025, we will house the RA in the interim between job conclusion and the start of the academic year at no charge. Location to be determined based on availability of permanent fall 2025 location.

Requirements

  • Must be a current undergraduate student
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must not have an active student conduct record from April 1, 2025, through May 14, 2025

Basic Expectations

Each Summer Housing Resident Assistant, under the direct supervision of the Summer Housing Residence Hall Director(s) will carry out all responsibilities related to housing for Sacred Heart University for Summer Students and Interns, and Summer Camps.

Each Summer Housing Resident Assistant will serve as on-duty staff for the residence halls which house the Summer SHU Students and Interns, Summer Camps, and are also expected to work at least two 4 hours shifts per week as part of their Office of Residential Life duties. This shift will mainly focus on the administrative needs of the department. Summer Resident Assistants are expected to work each First Year Orientation Sessions. There may be significant weekend and evening work, and fluctuation in the number of hours worked per week should be anticipated. Some weeks will require 40 or more hours of work, while some will require fewer than 20 hours. 

Summer Resident Assistants are expected to have a positive attitude, willingness to work hard, flexibility to adapt to a varying work schedule, the ability to think and act quickly and intelligently, resourcefulness, the desire and commitment to work as part of a team, and an understanding of, and commitment to, quality customer service.

All Summer Staff must complete an online Sexual Misconduct and Bystander Intervention Training provided by Sacred Heart University Human Resources before the start of employment. 

There will be a required day of training sessions on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Training is a required component of the Summer RA job. Staff will be required to be available Thursday, May 15, 2025, and Friday, May 16, 2025, for building prep and move-in. Staff will also be required to be available Friday, August 8, 2025, for Summer Housing Move-Out.

Position Responsibilities

Building Administration

  • Assist in check-ins, check-outs, and key card exchanges for Summer Students.
  • Address maintenance and facilities needs expeditiously.
  • Communicate effectively with Office of Residential Life staff, Public Safety, Facilities & Construction and fellow RAs in all matters pertaining to Summer Students.
  • Perform occupants checks of rooms as directed by Summer Housing Residence Hall Director

Residential Life Office Administration

  • Work two, four hour shifts in the Residential Life office each week
    • Schedule to be determined once hired
    • Monday – Thursday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday – Thursday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Assist in room assignments for incoming students for the Fall semester
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, copying, and assembly of mailings, etc.
  • Provide assistance with damage billing and appeals
  • Utilize excellent customer service in executing all responsibilities
  • Work two First Year Orientation Sessions - dates are June 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 & 18 

On-Call Responsibilities

  • Serve as rotating on-duty staff throughout the summer in Summer Student and Intern housing, as well as Summer Camp housing
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Uphold and enforce University policies
  • Collect rent from rent-paying Summer Students during duty office hours

Community Development

  • Work to ensure the safety and comfort of Summer Housing SHU Students and Interns
  • Collaborate with fellow RAs to provide 2 social events throughout the summer
  • Mediate any roommate issues that may arise
  • Other duties as assigned
