Supervision

The Resident Success Assistant (RSA) is supervised by the Residence Hall Director (RHD) of the assigned area, any Residence Hall Director while on call, the Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Director of Residential Life, and the Dean of Students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student.
  • Must maintain a 2.6 semester and cumulative grade point average.
  • Must not have any active Judicial Sanctions to participate in the hiring process as well as at the time of employment.
  • Must have lived in University Housing for at least one semester (Preferred).
  • Commitment to a full academic year on campus (Preferred)

Responsibilities

Community Building

Through one-on-one and group interactions, the RSA is responsible for monitoring their assigned area, meeting their specific needs throughout the academic year.  The RSA is expected to be available for the residential students, know and address the specific needs of their assigned community, and support the students in enhancing their connections to the University.

University Resource

The RSA will know the who, what, where, and when of the Sacred Heart University community. Knowledge of the University will be used daily in the day-to-day interactions with the residential students, faculty, and administration.

Peer Assistance

The RSA will maintain relationships with the members of their community to help them with a number of concerns. The RSA will reflect on training experiences to directly help the student in need, or to appropriately refer them to an appropriate campus resource.

Residence Hall Programming

RSAs are required to present programs in their assigned areas to maintain a learning and social atmosphere. Residential students will be offered the opportunity to continue their learning experiences outside of the classroom. Through the community development plan, the RSA will have a direct responsibility in the creation, execution, and support of programming within the halls.

Administrative Duties

The RSA is responsible for supporting the RHD of their area by submitting complete and timely reports including, but not limited to:

  • Check-in/Check-out Paperwork
  • Weekly Reports
  • Occupancy Reports
  • Programming Paperwork
  • Incident Reports
  • PioConnect Tracking, etc.

Duty/On-Call Responsibilities

The RSA will serve on a rotating basis of on-call duty coverage for their residential community as directed by their supervisor, Director on Duty, Assistant Director of Residential Life, Director of Residential Life, and Dean of Students.

Health and Safety

The RSA is expected to be comfortable with the University Code of Conduct, and all housing policies. RSAs will participate in Health and Safety Inspections on a regularly scheduled basis.  In addition, all RSAs will hold students accountable for the health and safety conditions of their assigned living area on a regular basis.

Residence Hall Regulations

All RSAs will practice and uphold University Policy in their daily life, while living in University Housing. In addition, the RSA will communicate these standards with the residents of their area, and necessarily document any breach of these standards through the university’s educationally based judicial process.

Staff Training, Meetings and Communication

  • All RSAs will participate in Residential Life Student Staff Training for the two weeks prior to the start of the fall academic semester, and the three days prior to the start of the spring semester.
  • All RSAs must attend in-service trainings during the fall and spring semesters.
  • All staff members must attend a weekly staff meeting with their residence hall director, and one-on-one meetings with their supervisor.
  • All RSAs must submit weekly reports to their supervisors about their assigned areas.
  • All RSAs must stay and work through Senior Week and cannot leave until after Undergraduate Graduation.

Other duties as assigned. 

Continued Employment

All RSAs must reapply during the spring semester for the following academic year.  Reappointment may only occur after a satisfactory evaluation by the direct supervisor and completion of the application process during the spring semester.

Please be advised: The RSA position is one that requires a significant dedication and time commitment, as life in the halls does not operate by a traditional work-day schedule.  A successful RSA will be flexible, adaptable, and hardworking.
