If you are a new student and would like to start receiving benefits, your first step is to start the application process with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Details regarding the application process can be found online or by calling 1-888-442-4551. The VA is your best initial point of contact for questions concerning your benefit payment amounts and specific eligibility.
Sacred Heart University meets the requirements of CFR 21.4253(d)(2) and maintains adequate records to show the progress of each Veteran or eligible person receiving VA Educational Benefits. Records are retained for a minimum of three (3) years after the last day of the VA student’s final enrollment period.
The Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty is for qualified Servicepersons who entered active duty on or after June 30, 1985, and have paid into an education fund for one year.

Payment is sent directly to the student from VA. Payments are usually sent the first day of the month following the start of courses. - Verify Attendance
You must verify your attendance each month you are enrolled in courses. You can verify your attendance in W.A.V.E. Web Automated Verification of Enrollment or by calling the Interactive Voice Response telephone line (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378.
The Veteran Readiness and Employment Service program is for qualified Servicepersons with service-connected disabilities. To apply for services, Veterans and Service Members should submit VA Form 28-1900 to a VA Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Military Service Coordinator, and or VA Regional Office.
VR&E Counselors are assigned to students based on the Veteran’s county and state of residence. For students who are Connecticut residents, contact the Hartford Regional Office.

In addition to your DD-214 and Certificate of Eligibility, students will need to provide a copy of their VA Form 28-1905 Authorization of Training to the School Certifying Official. This is issued by the Rehabilitation Counselor once benefits have been approved.
Education Benefits under the Vocational Rehabilitation Program:
Tuition & Fee Payment
Sent directly to the school by the VA.
Books & Supplies
Covered by the VA – A bookstore voucher is issued to the student. All receipts are returned to the Student Accounts Office for processing.
Monthly Stipend
Paid to student.
The Post 9/11 GI Bill® is for qualified Servicepersons with at least 90 days of active service after September 10, 2001, or 30 days continuous if discharged for disability. Student may be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon program.
If you have eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® and any other GI Bill® program you must make an irrevocable election of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® before you can receive any benefits.
For approved programs, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® provides up to 36 months of education benefits.
Transfer of Benefits from Another School
Complete VA Form 22-1995 Request for Change of Program or Place of Training to transfer benefits to SHU.
Education Benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®
Tuition & Fee Payment
Sent directly to the school by VA. Tuition is capped at the national maximum rate for a private institution at $27,120.05 for the 2023-2024 academic year. Sacred Heart participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Serviceperson’s at the 100% tier may be eligible.
Additional Benefits
Applicable to students eligible at the 100% tier. Benefits less than 100% will be prorated based on eligibility percentage by the VA.
- Monthly Housing Allowance
Sent to the student. Based on rate of pursuit calculated by the VA and the zip code of your school. - Books and Supplies Stipend
Sent to the student. Yearly stipend of up to $1,000 based on enrollment.
What is the Yellow Ribbon Program?
The Yellow Ribbon Program was established by the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree-granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition and fee expenses that exceed the tuition and fee amounts payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®.
The institution can contribute a specified dollar amount of those expenses, and VA will match the contribution, not to exceed 50% of the difference.
To receive the Yellow Ribbon Program benefits, you must be enrolled in an approved program offered by an institution of higher learning that participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

The Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance program is available to eligible spouses and children of a veteran who has died while on active duty, or is permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-related condition.

Benefit Payment
Payment is sent directly to the student from VA. Payments are usually sent the first day of the month following the start of courses. The current monthly payment for full-time training is $1,401.
If you are a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, you may be able to get up to 36 months of benefits.The Montgomery GI Bill®-Selected Reserve is for qualified Servicepersons who have signed a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve signed after June 30, 1985.
