F-1 international students are permitted to work on-campus jobs that are not work-study jobs. Students can work up to 20 hours per week when school is in session, and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.

If a student is able to secure an on-campus job, the student would be required to obtain a letter from the department that will be hiring them. The letter needs to be on Sacred Heart University letterhead with the following information:

  • Name of the department they will work in
  • Number of hours per week
  • Start/end date of employment

“I got my offer letter, what now?”

Once the student receives the letter from the department they will work for, please upload it into the ISS Student Portal under On Campus Employment Offer Letter

The student will be issued a letter from the Office of International & Immigration Services to obtain a Social Security number. This letter will be housed in the portal in the documents section. A supplementary email will also be sent which contains important tips and information for visiting the Social Security office.

Upon receipt of both letters, student will be required to apply for a social security number at the Social Security office so the on-campus department can pay the student.

Students should not begin working until they have applied for their social security number.

Some Social Security offices require documentation with wet signatures.
