The Office for Inclusive Excellence (OIE) proudly engages faculty and staff fellows to lead education and service that contribute to the Pioneer pursuit for inclusive excellence.

Under the leadership of the chief diversity and inclusion officer (CDIO), the Inclusive Excellence Fellows program promotes faculty and staff engagement with the Pioneer Plan for Inclusive Excellence (PPIE), SHU’s diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging plan.

Fellowship Structure & Benefits

The scope of the fellowship is University-wide inclusive excellence (IE). Each fellow is responsible for working with the Office for Inclusive Excellence on research engagement and projects that are consistent with the OIE mission and the PPIE.

  • The fellowship term is two years, from August through May of each year
  • Fellows will work with the CDIO and designee, the director of inclusive excellence education
  • The expected average weekly time commitment is six hours
  • Fellows will facilitate university-wide inclusive excellence education initiatives, complete a cohort project, engage in an individual project and engage in professional learning
    • Individual project categories:
      • Institutional policy & systems review
      • Institutional accessibility
      • Faculty and staff support
      • Student support
        • Multicultural Affairs mentoring and student success initiatives
        • LGBTQ+ Affairs
      • Institutional IE climate and equity audits
      • IE education and development
      • IE innovation

Fellows will receive the following benefits during their term:

  • A $3,000 compensation stipend per academic year
  • Professional learning program
  • Access to some fiscal support for cohort initiatives
  • Collaboration and networking opportunities with campus leaders

Fellowship benefits end if a person vacates their fellowship position or if their employment with SHU ends.

Eligibility

  • All full-time and exempt faculty and staff in good standing are eligible to apply
  • Applicants must have successfully completed one year with SHU at the point of submitting the application

Application Submission Process & Deadline

Applications must include the following attached to the application as a single PDF document:

  • Two-page personal statement describing the applicant’s background in inclusive excellence-related work
    • The statement should highlight how the applicant has engaged with diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work, and highlight ways the applicant hopes to use the fellowship to advance Inclusive Excellence at SHU
    • The statement should indicate the individual project area(s) of interest with some information about why you're interested in the area(s)
  • Current CV or resume (five pages maximum)
  • Letter of support from your supervisor indicating that you as the applicant are in good standing and that the supervisor understands the terms of the fellowship

The application period for the 2025-2027 fellowship is closed. Decisions will be communicated in July. The fellowship term will begin August 1.
