How do I become a s.w.e.e.t. Peer Educator?
Complete the online application and have your reference submit the Peer Educator Reference by October 10, 2025. Applications will be reviewed by the Peer Education Coordinator and s.w.e.e.t. e-board members. The reference form should be completed by a teacher, supervisor, advisor, coach, professor, mentor, employer, SHU faculty or staff member, etc. References completed by peers, students, relatives or friends will not be accepted. Interviews will be scheduled for candidates via email once their application and reference are received. Candidates must be available to return early to campus in January before classes start to attend peer education training.
Qualifications
Including, but not limited to:
- Academic success at SHU measured by a GPA of 2.5 or above
- Creativity
- Energy
- Positive attitude
- Dependability and reliability
- Sensitivity to and interest in issues of alcohol and other drugs, emotional well-being and other wellness issues
- Open minded, non-judgmental
- Good listening and interpersonal skills
- Strong communication skills in one-on-one and group settings
- Ability to interact and present information to students and the community at SHU
- Honest desire to help others
- Commitment to making healthy lifestyle choices and role modeling those choices
- Status as a freshman, sophomore or junior (due to training being in January, seniors are not eligible to apply as they can't fulfill the one year commitment)
Responsibilities & Duties
- Peer Educators will serve for the full academic year
- Plan and run outreach programs, campus events, screenings, and campaigns
- Provide information and resources to students
- Make presentations to various groups and organizations on campus
- Participate in on-going evaluation of the s.w.e.e.t. experience
- Attend training sessions, in-services and weekly meetings
- Communicate with advisor throughout the year
