Mentoring programs provide opportunities for SHU students to engage with youth in the Bridgeport community on a one-on-one basis. SHU volunteers make a long-term commitment (1-3 years) to work with the same student mentees weekly. Mentors build lasting relationships with their mentees and provide academic, social, and emotional support to at-risk students.

LEAD Mentoring
Learn. Evolve. Aspire. Dream.
Formally known as “Sunshine Kids,” LEAD has transitioned from middle school students to high schoolers within Hall Neighborhood House’s Post-Secondary Prep Program. LEAD focuses on college preparation and activities. Every Tuesday, Hall House students come to Sacred Heart’s campus where they partake in different activities and get dinner with mentors. The mentors are students from Sacred Heart ranging from different majors, involvement or ages. The curriculum also calls for the mentees to partake in activities that take place at Hall Neighborhood House every Thursday.
Activities include figuring out skills and traits to help determine a major or career goal, resume building with the Career Center, student athletics, the Theatre Arts Program and exposing them to the different opportunities college offers. The overall goal of this program is to answer any questions or concerns that high school students do not have access to and to make them feel comfortable with the college process.
