Events & Symposia
The CTL offers professional development for all SHU instructors via in-person and virtual workshops, panels, symposia and events. Wherever possible, workshops, symposia, and events are recorded and posted on the CTL Instructor Resource site for those who were unable to attend. The CTL also contributes to university events, such as New Faculty Orientation and the Faculty Institute.
Read on below for examples of recent CTL events and symposia:
Equity at the Heart of Teaching Symposium
The SHU Center for Teaching & Learning and the Office for Inclusive Excellence hosted a fall 2023 symposium, “Equity at the Heart of Teaching,” on Friday, October 20, 2023 at the CTL and University Commons on West Campus.
This symposium brought together our campus community to meaningfully discuss ways to promote equity in teaching at classroom, department, college, and university levels. The event included a keynote by Dr. Tracie Addy, author of What Inclusive Instructors Do and Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning at Lafayette College. The event also featured a discussion panel and opportunities for SHU faculty, staff and graduate students to share their equitable teaching practices via presentations and other formats.
A recording of the event and session materials are available on the Equity at the Heart of Teaching Symposium SharePoint.
Better than a Bot: Teaching in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The Center for Teaching and Learning hosted a panel discussion in February 2023 to learn how SHU faculty are thinking about teaching and learning in the age of artificial intelligence. Entitled “Better than a Bot: Teaching in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” panelists included Steven Michels (Political Science & Global Affairs), Katie Cunningham (Teacher Education), Jeff Naftzinger (Languages & Literature), and Colleen Butler-Sweet (Sociology, Criminology & Criminal Justice). All participants were invited to contribute their knowledge, ideas, and questions.
A recording of the event and additional resources can be found on the ChatGPT & Artificial Intelligence Guidance page on the internal CTL Instructor Resource website.
