CTL Faculty Fellows
The CTL proudly partners with SHU faculty to promote best practices in teaching and learning. Read below to learn about our current and previous faculty fellows and faculty fellow programs.
CTL Faculty Fellows
The Center for Teaching & Learning Faculty Fellows are a distinguished group of SHU faculty committed to promoting excellence in teaching and learning through ongoing leadership roles in collaboration with the CTL.
CTL Faculty Research Fellows
CTL Faculty Research Fellows collaborate with CTL staff on research projects on a semester or academic year basis. Projects are aimed at enhancing student success and/or teaching excellence.
Current Faculty Research Fellows

- Fall 2023 – present: Empowering Students Through Supportive Academic Notifications
- Research Project Description: Receiving disappointing news about academic progress, such as an academic warning, can make students question their abilities and sense of belonging—but it doesn’t have to be that way! Research in social science shows that thoughtfully designed messages, even when conveying challenging news, can provide support, build confidence, and encourage help-seeking behaviors. In collaboration with the CTL (Amanda Moras and Beth Luoma), this project aims to revise academic notifications at SHU to inspire struggling students to take positive steps, like meeting with professors or advisors and using academic support services, while lessening negative emotions and reactions.
CTL Faculty Teaching Fellows
CTL Faculty Teaching Fellows serve as facilitators for cohort-based, semester-long CTL programming in close collaboration with CTL staff, including our Learning Communities and our Peer Coaching Program. Their collective efforts create spaces at SHU to meaningfully discuss teaching and learning best practices, to support instructors as they implement changes in their teaching.

CEIT Inclusive Teaching Fellows
Prior to the founding of the CTL, the SHU Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching (CEIT) hosted a cohort of Inclusive Teaching Fellows, led by the Director of Inclusive Teaching, Professor Lee Morgan. With representation across SHU colleges, each CEIT Inclusive Teaching Fellow completed an EdX course entitled, “Inclusive Teaching: Supporting All Students in the College Classroom,” offered by ColumbiaX, an online learning initiative of Columbia University. The CEIT Inclusive Teaching Fellows also organized programming and events, curated resources for instructors, and facilitated a session for the Spring 2021 SHU Faculty Institute.

Faculty Fellow Experiences
The antiracism FLC provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with faculty across disciplines, focusing on the nature of systemic barriers in higher education and strategies to influence change. We dedicated uninterrupted time to speaking openly and honestly, examining, reflecting, and exploring ways we can improve our engagement with another, with students, and the broader community. We didn't always find solutions to the broader issues, but we did find real value in sharing our perspectives, feeling heard, and connecting in meaningful ways.
What was most meaningful in my experience as a fellow was working regularly with a group of peers committed to engaging intentionally and skillfully in advancing social justice, alleviating harm and suffering, and fostering true inclusion across the diversity spectrum. I was honored to be invited to challenge myself and the larger SHU Community to invest in actionable steps to promote positive, equitable change.
