The CTL offers virtual writing workshops designed to refine students’ writing skills and engage them in thought-provoking discussions about academic writing. Topics include citation styles, basic grammar, creative writing and more. A full list of current workshops is available on the PASS Portal, where students can also register to attend.

Sample workshops we offer include:

American Psychological Association (APA) style is one of the most common citation formats for university papers. In this workshop, we discuss the general format of APA style (7th edition), practice with examples of quotes and paraphrases, and review how to write in-text citations and a References page using APA format. In addition, resources will be made available to help you with future APA papers.

Finally figure out how to capture source information without direct quotes. What is paraphrasing, really? What does it look like and what should I avoid? How do I approach it? Through interactive discussion and activities, you’ll learn practical strategies to relay others' work clearly and compliantly using essential connections to your assignment topics and objectives.

Dive into fundamental grammar tools, conquer common pitfalls, and gain confidence in constructing flawless sentences. Through interactive discussion and activities, you'll gain a solid grasp of language tools covering structure and mechanics critical to expression and for meeting expectations.

Verb choice and grammar can spell the difference between a strong paper and one that needs improvement. This workshop explains the difference between weak and strong verbs and offers some examples to help you recognize strong verbs. In addition, we will discuss active vs. passive voice and review basic grammar and parts of speech to help make your future papers stronger than ever.

Become "choosy" with quotes, data, and other research that can best spotlight your independent understanding and ideas when you engage in this workshop’s interactive discussion and activities. Plus, discover how to secure a smooth, clear fit between them all for integrity and a truly supportive framework that's expected.

Short stories are essential parts of American literature and others across the globe. But what makes this style of writing so timeless and valuable? During this 50-minute workshop, learn about the elements of a short story and how this genre can serve as an excellent introduction for those interested in creative writing. You’ll have time to start your own flash fiction piece or short story at the end of the workshop.
