Tutoring Program Goals
The Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) tutorial program strives to create an equitable and inclusive learning environment, allowing students to achieve their fullest potential as independent thinkers and providing peer tutors with professional growth and leadership opportunities. We recognize that learning takes place within the full context of the human experience and seek to meet students where they are. We do this by tailoring learning strategies to build self-confidence and self-awareness for each unique learner while considering the social, cognitive, and emotional aspects of learning.
We aim to:
- Promote a culture where students feel comfortable asking for help and reduce stigma associated with tutoring.
- Personalize learning strategies to help students achieve their academic and personal learning goals and grow as self-directed learners.
- Hire peer tutors who empathize with their tutees and provide them with the skills, tools and best practices to foster a positive and engaging learning environment.
- Engage peer tutors in professional development and growth opportunities to build communication, leadership, problem-solving, and organizational competencies useful during their studies and after graduation.
- Collaborate with university leaders, faculty and academic programs to enhance students’ skills and knowledge to support course objectives.
- Utilize assessment, evaluation data, and educational research literature to inform and guide tutorial program changes and improvements to meet the needs of our students.
- Contribute to student success and retention by providing academic support while building a sense of community and belonging for all students.
