Tutor Training
Training covers the basics of tutoring, communication skills, learning and studying techniques, ethics and equity and other topics. All tutors are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of tutor training. Below is an outline of the training topics, which is subject to change as needed.
Tutor Training
Orientation is split into two live sessions (Part 1 and Part 2) covering tutoring requirements, administrative processes, essential functions of the tutoring role, and appropriate and inappropriate behaviors for the tutoring role. Tutors must complete Orientation Part 1 before conducting any tutorial sessions.
This live session covers how to deliver a tutoring session using effective methodology.
This live session covers the standards of academic integrity and policies and procedures related to ethical academic behavior.
This is an asynchronous training covering the principles of UDL that promote engagement in the tutorial session regardless of students’ ability and/or disability status.
This asynchronous module covers various approaches to effectively managing time in and out of a session and how to provide tutees with tips and techniques to incorporate in their own time management plans.
This asynchronous module covers how to identify key information in a syllabus and how to instruct your tutees to do the same.
This is an asynchronous training covering the principles of effective communication and how to recognize communication differences and adjust interactions accordingly.
This asynchronous training covers how to use active listening and responding skills in the tutoring process to enhance the tutoring experience.
This asynchronous training covers how to incorporate culturally inclusive tutoring practices into tutorial sessions to create a supportive environment for students with diverse identities.
This asynchronous training covers research-based best practices for taking notes on specific types of information and how to integrate instruction on those methods into the tutorial session.
After completing modules 1-10, we ask you to reflect on your training and tutoring experiences.
