Are you passionate about fostering a supportive learning environment and positively impacting your peers' academic success? If so, we invite you to join the CTL team as a Peer Tutor. As a Peer Tutor, you'll play a crucial role in your peers' educational journey, offering personalized assistance and guidance to enhance their academic proficiencies. This position benefits tutees by providing them with valuable academic support and offers numerous advantages to you as a tutor. You will gain valuable experience as a tutor and develop skills highly valued by employers, such as leadership, communication and mentoring. As a Peer Tutor, you will:
- Develop strong communication and interpersonal skills by explaining complex concepts in a way that is accessible and relatable to your peers.
- Have opportunities to take on leadership roles through participation in our Peer Tutor Leadership Program and hosting student events.
- Showcase not only your academic proficiency, but also your commitment to helping others succeed.
Be a Peer Tutor!
- Tutors can set their own schedule
- Tutors can work up to 15 hours per week
- Tutors can meet with tutees in person or virtually
- Tutors earn $16.35 per hour (effective 1/1/25)
- Tutors can use tutoring for work study.
Criteria
The Center for Teaching & Learning is looking for graduate and undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Interested in helping the SHU student community
- Able to discuss and model good learning habits
- Have excellent communication, organization and time management skills
- Are responsible and dependable
- Have demonstrated mastery of the course(s) they wish to tutor
- Are in good academic standing
- Receptive to ongoing evaluation and feedback
Tutors must also meet the following requirements:
- Have a B or better in the courses they want to tutor (Note: Some programs may have a different grade criteria)
- Provide a copy of school transcripts showing the grade in the course they wish to tutor
- Submit a faculty recommendation form for each course they want to tutor
- Interview with the CTL student support staff
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours of paid tutor training during the semester
