PALs are students who provide course-based supplemental instruction through group study and review sessions. PAL support can be offered both in class and out of class, depending on the needs of the course and students. Departments have the flexibility to customize the role's name to fit their needs, such as Biology Learning Lab Leaders, Nursing CLAs or Math PALs, and will provide professional development for their PALS.

PAL Eligibility

  • Must be nominated by the instructor or department for whom they will be a PAL
  • Have received a B or better in the course for which they will be a PAL, as verified by the nominating faculty member or department
  • Renewal of PALs for future semesters will be dependent on demonstrated student attendance at previous PAL sessions

PAL Duties

  • Collaborate with instructor to develop a schedule in which the PAL will be available to host study or review sessions
  • Communicate PAL hours with the CTL to list on the PASS Portal at the start of the semester
  • Meet weekly with the instructor for whom they are a PAL to debrief previous sessions and plan future sessions
  • Attend a CTL PAL info session and training at the beginning of the semester
  • Log session attendance and work hours as required by the CTL and/or department or program guidelines
  • Attend class or lab sessions as required
  • Complete a PAL summary/payment verification form at the end of the semester
  • Please note: PALs are not allowed to participate in grading of student assignments

Faculty/Department Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively develop a schedule with the PAL and share it via the course syllabus and LMS
  • Meet weekly with the PAL to debrief previous sessions and plan future sessions
  • Provide professional development to PAL to complete their assigned duties
  • Complete a PAL summary/payment verification form at the end of the semester
  • Upon request, provide attendance records to CTL

Payment Information

Students receive an hourly wage and are compensated biweekly.
