Organization’s mission charges nursing leaders to improve healthcare for everyone

Sigma Global Nursing Excellence | Mu Delta ChapterThe chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International honor society at Sacred Heart University’s Dr. Susan L. Davis, R.N., & Richard J. Henley College of Nursing is now Mu Delta.

This honor society is the only one for nurses. Founded in 1922 by six nurses, it was chartered at SHU in 1987 and is part of Region 15, which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, as well as part of New York and Nova Scotia. Sigma’s mission is to “develop nurse leaders anywhere and everywhere to improve healthcare everywhere.”

Mu Delta was recognized in 2019-20 as a Chapter Giving Club Donor, an honor awarded to chapters that donate a specific amount per chapter member to fund education grants and special programs for members around the world. The chapter’s current president, Constance (Connie) Glenn, clinical assistant professor, leads an executive board and committee comprising faculty and alumni. Sigma members who belong to another university’s chapter may transfer membership (or become dual members of Mu Delta for a nominal annual cost) by contacting Sigma: 888.634.7575 (US/Canada toll-free).

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the annual Sigma induction ceremony for new members will take place virtually on April 10, beginning at 1 p.m. Nursing students are being vetted for Sigma membership eligibility, and letters of invitation from Sigma are expected in the next month. Registered nurses who were not inducted as students may apply as nurse leaders by completing a membership application.

Mu Delta’s spring education offering will address human trafficking, with Janice Peck from Baylor University presenting on April 17, from 1-3 p.m. Contact hours are expected to be available, and Mu Delta is offering this education at no cost as a public service.

Nursing students and nurses are encouraged to join the Mu Delta Chapter and become involved, either formally through board or committee membership, or informally through volunteering to assist with various chapter initiatives. There are numerous resources to help potential members become better acquainted with Mu Delta, its executive board and committee members, and its activities.
