Is This Grad Program Right for Me?
I got in—but how do I know if I should go?
With so many graduate schools available to students looking for an advanced degree, these are some factors that can help you determine the best fit for your academic goals, career goals and personal learning style.
On Campus or Online
Are you the kind of student who shines in group brainstorming sessions? Or are you more of an independent learner who enjoys working in peaceful solitude? Are you planning on studying a hands-on discipline or are you hoping to do research at an institution across the country?
For some learners, a program’s delivery can be just as important as what it covers. At Sacred Heart University, graduate courses are offered both on campus and online with hybrid options also available in many degree programs. Consider what makes you most comfortable as you weigh your options.
Time
No matter how you go to class—in person or online—an advanced degree will take some time and might require some temporary adjustments to your established routine. Many master’s degree programs can take a year or two, depending on whether you’re a full- or part-time student, and some can take up to four years.
At SHU, some students opt for accelerated programs and undergraduates can apply for dual degree programs that sometimes overlap with their undergraduate studies. Be sure to ask about all the options open to you to tailor your course progression to your individual work and home life.
Faculty
Perhaps you’re passionate about studying humpback whales and the world’s most renowned humpback whale researcher works at one of the graduate schools you’re considering. That alone might place that university at the top of your list. You might be wise to connect with the professor ahead of time and make sure that he or she teaches the program you’re considering, mentors master’s candidates and isn’t going on a year-long sabbatical while you’re on campus.
Sacred Heart professors work with both undergraduate and graduate students, providing prime opportunities to collaborate on research, presentation, conferences and publication.
Internships and Industry Connections
Are there opportunities outside of class that can help you on your career path? Sacred Heart’s strong connections with regional businesses and entrepreneurs have fostered prime possibilities for graduate students. At SHU’s Conference Center at the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology, Sacred Heart students collaborate with small businesses and start-ups, serving as interns and gaining valuable experience.
Services available to graduates at SHU’s Center for Career & Professional Development include alumni mentorship and assistance finding the perfect internship or job through Handshake, an exclusive job search tool housing more than 3.5 million positions around the globe.
Accreditation
Be sure the schools you are considering are fully accredited, as most employers don’t place much value on degrees from non-accredited institutions.
Sacred Heart is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and several University programs either have received specialized accreditation or approval by the State of Connecticut or have been granted specialized accreditation by national professional organizations.
