Esports curriculum, training provides students with skills to master games

Team Meta LogoSacred Heart University’s club esports team is aiming for success through a new partnership with TeamMETA, a full-service esports management and development company.

Esports, or “electronic sports,” entails a group of people playing competitive electronic games for spectators. Christopher Leonard, owner and CEO of TeamMETA, said he and his team of coaches will provide SHU’s student-athletes with a rigorous training schedule. Each week, students will learn a new skill based on their games of choice and skill levels. There’s also a curriculum for each game that coaches follow to help students become better players.

“As a TeamMETA-represented school, we not only teach and inspire, we give schools access to play against some of the most well-known teams in the country though the TeamMETA College Conference,” said Leonard. The conferences take place throughout the year and include more than 150 colleges and universities.

Not all students on SHU’s club esports team are competitive players, and that’s okay, Leonard said. His coaches keep all students engaged, and when a student is ready to become competitive, TeamMETA can help that person make the transition. “We make students better at their game and provide them with the best level of competition,” he said.

Ray Mencio, director of SHU’s club sports, said esports is one of the fastest-growing and most competitive sports in the world. With TeamMETA’s coaching, the team hopes to be at the forefront of collegiate esports in the Northeast region. “The partnership with META is a great opportunity for our program to take the next step in collegiate esports,” Mencio said. “META offers our students the opportunity to work with premier experts and coaches in the world of esports.”
