The Farrington College of Education & Human Development is proud to offer the Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy.
The Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy is a 33-credit state approved, nationally recognized program preparing prospective literacy professionals for CT literacy certification, which include the 102 Remedial Reading and Language Arts Specialist certification, and the 097 Reading and Language Arts Consultant certification. Courses are completely online and include a combination of synchronous and asynchronous meetings, which are scheduled for late afternoon and evenings to accommodate the work schedules of full-time teachers.
Clinical experiences include authentic opportunities for reading candidates to hone their practice through one-on-one tutoring, mentoring, coaching, and leading professional learning experiences. Candidates acquire facility in the identification, administration, and interpretation of assessments, and can intuit about how to best use results to design instruction and intervention that will enhance student learning.

The first 21 credits of the program are applied to the Connecticut Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts Certification (102). Candidates applying for the CLSP must have earned a masters degree and possess a CT teaching certificate.
Candidates are eligible to apply for state certification (102) after successful completion of program requirements, which include our seven state approved courses, and 30 months or three years of successful classroom experience working under a teaching certificate.
The prerequisite for admission to the 097 program is the (102) Remedial Reading & Remedial Language Arts certificate. Candidates applying for admission must have a teaching certificate, 30 months of full-time teaching experience and have completed all program requirements as stipulated within the 102 plan of study. Candidates are eligible to apply for state certification (097) after serving for 10 months in a position that requires the 102 certificate.
Students who complete the coursework for Tier I and Tier II will obtain their Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy.
