The MPH program has a fall and spring entry. The program offers rolling admissions.
Prerequisites
Education
No specific prerequisite courses are required. Successful candidates display a solid mix of quantitative skills and effective verbal and written communication through either coursework or professional experience.
Public health is a multi-disciplinary field and applicants from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Experience
No specific experience is required. However, please highlight any public health-related work, research, internship or volunteer experience in the statement of purpose.
Successful applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the health of the public through a well-articulated essay that highlights career goals and any previous experience volunteering, working, or researching topics related to public health.
- The SOPHAS application is required of all external applicants
- For current SHU students enrolled in the 4+1 MPH Combined Degree program, do not apply through SOPHAS. Please complete the online graduate application
- The GRE is not required for applications to the MPH program and scores will not be considered if submitted.
- An Official English Language Proficiency examination is required for all non-native English speakers. Applicants may submit TOFEL, TOEFL iBT® Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials, Academic IELTS, Duolingo.
- Official transcript(s) from all colleges and universities previously attended must be submitted. The SOPHAS Official Transcript Request Form must be included with each transcript and are to be sent from the academic institution directly to SOPHAS. Official transcripts will not be accepted from the applicant.
- If you are currently enrolled in a degree program, you must submit an official transcript of all coursework and progress to date. If accepted to the MPH program, a final official transcript will be required.
- International applicants should follow the International Application Instructions for required transcript documentation.
- Recommenders should comment on the academic strengths and/or professional work of the applicant, the potential for success in graduate study and potential as a public health professional.
- SOPHAS provides an electronic submission process for all letters of recommendation.
- A current curriculum vitae or résumé is required. This document should be uploaded directly to the SOPHAS application.
All applicants must submit a personal statement/essay that clearly articulates career goals and demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the health of the public by highlighting previous academic training or experience volunteering, working or researching topics related to public health.
On the SOPHAS application, you must submit a 1-2 page statement of purpose, describing your past education, your experience, and your current professional/career objectives. Your essay should clearly address the following:
- Why: What are the reasons you wish to earn an MPH at SHU?
- What: What is the relevance to your prior education, research experience, or volunteer experience to this field?
- How: How will you leverage your MPH degree for a career in public health practice, research or medical practice?
