3 + 2 Engineering Program
Students spend 3 years at SHU followed by 2 more years at one of our partner engineering schools (Columbia & RPI), and earn bachelor’s degrees in both a liberal arts discipline (from SHU) and an engineering major (from Columbia or RPI) at the end of the five year program. The combination of a broad liberal arts background and a technical engineering degree prepares students to work as leaders in engineering and science fields; the dual degrees make 3+2 Engineering Program graduates highly sought after in the job market. With a grounding in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, SHU 3+2 Program students are particularly poised to apply engineering design in the service of the human community.
Sacred Heart University also offers a bachelor of science degree in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
Majors
SHU
RPI
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical & Biological Engineering
- Industrial Management Engineering
Columbia
- Applied Mathematics
- Applied Physics
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Earth and Environmental Engineering
- Engineering Mechanics
- Materials Science Engineering
- Operations Research
Each engineering major has specific prerequisite courses required for admission to that program, and are easiest to complete when paired with particular SHU degrees. Some tracks may require an overload or summer coursework to fully complete within 3 years. Prospective engineering students will receive a dedicated advisor to help them navigate the 3+2 program options and ensure compliance with program requirements, including application of any relevant AP/transfer credits.
6 Program Tracks
- Chemistry to Biomedical Engineering at RPI Track
- Chemistry to Chemical & Biological Engineering at RPI Track
- Math to Industrial Management Engineering at RPI Track
- Math to Mechanical or Civil Engineering at Columbia
- Chemistry to Chemical or Materials Science Engineering at Columbia Track
- Computer Science to Mechanical or Civil Engineering at Columbia Track
Admission Criteria for Engineering Programs at Columbia & RPI
- Overall GPA: 3.30 for RPI; 3.30 for Columbia
- Pre-engineering courses GPA: 3.30 average for RPI; no course below 3.0 for Columbia
- Completion of all pre-engineering foundation prerequisite courses for intended engineering major
- Completion of SHU major & degree requirements
- Columbia will not accept prerequisite classes taken online before Spring 2020 or after Spring 2021. These classes must also be taken for a letter grade
- 3+2 students will receive priority admission to Columbia
- Students who’s application demonstrates they’ve satisfied all RPI prerequisites (according to one of the three defined RPI tracks) are guaranteed admission to RPI provided there is an available space in the chosen engineering discipline.
Students who fail to meet one of the criteria may still apply to RPI or Columbia and will be considered in their competitive transfer applicant pool.
Tuition/Financial Aid
Standard SHU financial aid process & award package applies for the first 3 years, then student pays all applicable tuition & fees at the partner engineering school for the final 2 years. Scholarships offered by SHU will only apply in the first 3 years and do not carry over. Students are eligible for financial aid and scholarships at the partner institution just as any other student.
Frequently Asked Questions
Student-athletes from SHU are not guaranteed spots on RPI/Columbia teams but may contact coaches to try out. SHU athletic scholarships will not carry over but student may be eligible for funds from partner school.
After 5 years, you will graduate with 2 bachelors degrees, one from SHU and one from RPI or Columbia. Depending on your exact choice of majors at SHU & at Columbia/RPI, and any AP/transfer credits you enter with, a semester with an overload or some summer coursework may be required.
The SHU degree is awarded based on credits being transferred back from Columbia/RPI (although you will have completed the major requirements for a degree at SHU, you won’t have 120 total credits in just 3 years). Awarding both degrees at the end of 5 years means you remain an undergraduate student for the entire program, ensuring your eligibility for corresponding federal financial aid.
Unlike many other fields, in engineering, Masters degrees are not considered necessary for employment and the pay differential is not high enough to be worth it. Industry experience is valued much more highly, so most engineers get to work right away with a Bachelors degree and, if interested in pursuing a graduate degree, do so after a few years of work experience (and often get the graduate degree paid for by their employer).
The specific combination of two Bachelors degrees that you’ll earn in the 3+2 program (one in a liberal arts discipline, one in and engineering discipline) makes graduates highly sought after by employers – it shows you have both technical credentials and hands-on experience, as well as the oral and written communication skills, problem solving mentality, and understanding of social & historical contexts that a liberal arts background provides. It prepares you to be a leader in an engineering field, not just a technician. And, if you decide in your first or second year that engineering isn’t the right fit for you, you have all the options of a comprehensive liberal arts university to explore.
We will have several co-curricular opportunities throughout your three years at SHU to explore different engineering fields and topics (e.g. visits to local engineering firms, talks from practicing engineers in various disciplines, hands-on design challenges, etc.)
You will pay SHU tuition for the 3 years you are enrolled at SHU, and then pay RPI/Columbia tuition for the 2 years you are enrolled there.
No. Each school administers their own financial aid processes, which you apply for along with your combined plan transfer application. Note that Columbia only offers need-based aid and does not award merit scholarships.
Initially you only need to apply to SHU. You then submit an application to RPI/Columbia.
We encourage you to visit each campus during your 2nd or 3rd year.
Technically, yes - but most students will cater their plan of study to one particular program so may not be eligible for the other.
Yes, you are invited to return to SHU to walk with your “social class”, i.e. after your 4th year of undergraduate studies (although you will not receive your SHU diploma until completion of the entire 3+2 program).
As a 3+2 engineering student at Sacred Heart, you will be provided with the opportunity to gain a Liberal Arts bachelors in an environment where you aren't just a name on the attendance sheet before transferring over to either RPI or Columbia where you get to finalize your engineering bachelors; this program is the perfect experience for someone who wants to enter the workforce as the most well-rounded employee at any interview. ~Nathaniel Barone
