Holmes Scholars Program
Sacred Heart University’s Farrington College of Education & Human Development joins more than 50 member institutions of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) nationwide in sponsoring the Holmes Scholarship Program.
Launched in 1991 by the Holmes Group, the program was created with the founding goal of establishing equity, diversity and cultural competence in higher education and PK-12 schools. Designed to enrich the scholarly experience and professional training of talented graduate-level students of color pursuing careers in education, the program has evolved over the years. While the specific goals and groups represented have varied, the overarching mission of diversifying the profession has remained steadfast.
Why Apply to Become a Holmes Scholar?
Holmes Scholars enjoy many benefits. The Farrington College of Education & Human Development covers the costs of sending each of its Holmes Scholars to the AACTE’s annual conference, as well as the two-day pre-conference exclusive to Holmes Scholars.
In addition, our Holmes Scholars benefit through:
- A national network of peers with online social networks and other events
- Mentorship and leadership opportunities with Holmes Scholar alumni
- Dedicated sessions, a job fair and opportunities to present your research at AACTE’s annual meeting
- AACTE’s annual Washington Week and participation in the AACTE Day on the Hill, which includes networking events with state chapter leaders and meetings with members of Congress

SHU doctoral students pursuing education careers who are from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are invited to submit an online application.
