Why Earn Your Dyslexia Graduate Certificate at Sacred Heart?

The Dyslexia Graduate Certificate empowers classroom teachers and specialists to inform literacy assessment and instruction in both general education and intervention settings.

This fully-online, 18-credit program in Sacred Heart’s Farrington College of Education & Human Development is led by faculty experienced in the field and research. You will benefit from an emphasis on reading science-aligned practice to improve individual reading and writing development. Through challenging and engaging coursework, you’ll be positioned to implement and analyze evidence-based assessments using screening and tools as well as progress monitoring.

In addition to earning the credential, 9 credits from Sacred Heart’s Dyslexia Graduate Certificate program may be applied to our Sixth-Year Degree in Literacy or Sixth-Year Degree in Special Education programs.

  • Understand the impact of dyslexia on a child’s social, emotional and academic development
  • Identify early warning signs and distinguishing characteristics of dyslexia in the areas of reading, spelling, writing, math, time management, executive function, motor control and attention
  • Interpret the foundations of literacy acquisition with an emphasis on word recognition, fluency and language comprehension for skilled reading
  • Comprehend word structure including phonemes and associated graphemes, syllabication rules, morphemes and more
  • Conduct and interpret scientifically validated literacy assessments for the purposes of screening, progress monitoring and evaluation
  • Design and implement evidence-based literacy instruction for students in an emotionally supportive environment to strengthen reading, spelling and writing
  • Prepare students to complete Orton-Gillingham Academy certification

Career Outlook

It is estimated that dyslexia affects up to 20 percent of the population. The Dyslexia Graduate Certificate distinguishes instructors with highly needed expertise that impacts children’s lives.

The Dyslexia Certificate prepares educators to lead, design and implement evidence-based literacy instruction. Graduates will be qualified to work in: 

  • Public and private schools
  • State education offices
  • Child advocacy centers

The Graduate Certificate also prepares educators to develop and apply interventions in a variety of settings and at leadership levels.
