Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The Graduate Assistant will receive expert training from WSHU in order to: 

  • Become well versed in all aspects of radio production
  • Help with the production of classical music programming
  • Record interviews
  • Studio audio board operation
  • Studio chores and maintenance 

Knowledge & Skills Needed

Radio and Multimedia production skills. 

Unusual Working Conditions

Occasional Fridays, weekends, and evenings but for the most part, normal scheduled hours.

Sports Communication & Media Graduate Assistant 1

Assist the SCM graduate and SCMA undergraduate faculty with daily needs; studio and control room help, shooting and editing videos, as well as creating graphics for a variety of events that SCMA hosts.

    assistant which may include grading homework assignments
  • Be prepared to assist fellow graduate students as well as undergraduate students with any editing, camera, equipment or facility questions

Sports Communication & Media Graduate Assistant 2

Assist the SCM graduate and SCMA undergraduate faculty with daily needs; studio and control room help, shooting and editing videos, as well as creating graphics for a variety of events that SCMA hosts.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all purchase orders for SCM program including camera equipment, apparel, and control room supplies.
  • Be able to produce, shoot and edit video content for SCMA, other university departments and outside vendors.
  • Assist first-year Graduate Assistant in learning the equipment, studio and control room.
  • Create SportsBuzz crew lists weekly while either directing or producing each episode.
  • Take the lead on all events put on by the graduate program as well as live sporting event broadcasts, which you will host production meetings, create graphics, create crew lists and manage setup and gameday operations.

Knowledge & Skills Needed

  • Bachelor of Arts in Sports Communication or a related degree
  • Sports media production skills preferred

FTMA Graduate Assistant (GA1)

The FTMA Grad Assistant dedicates an average of 15 hours per week working for FTMA. The GA’s primary responsibilities include managing the Equipment Room (ER) including check in/out, maintaining the main space, maintenance of social media accounts, event coordination support and assisting the Program Coordinator with any duties as assigned.

  • Compensation: $10,800 stipend

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Equipment Room

The GA is the main point person between the equipment and the students. The equipment is one of FTMA’s most valuable resources so the GA must be detail-oriented, organized, and timely. The GA must also complete monthly inventory reports of the Equipment Room and inform their supervisor when new supplies need to be ordered.

Main Space/Reception

The GA is responsible to help keep the kitchenette and instructional space clean, including cleaning the pop-corn machine, microwave, toaster oven and coffee pot. The GA will reset furniture daily before and after classes or events, keep current our announcement boards, unpack and put away all deliveries, print and stock internship paperwork, and answer calls coming to the reception desk when they are on duty to work.

Social Media

The GA will plan, create, and post a minimum of two (2) Instagram posts and two (2) stories per week. Alongside the Program Coordinator, the GA will actively engage on social media with those connected to FTMA.

Event Support

The GA will attend all extracurricular events sponsored by FTMA and help to make sure they are executed well. This includes coordinating with caterers, assisting with any prep (equipment, printing, etc.), as well as assisting with equipment, technology, or in other ways necessary during the event.

FTMA Classroom Learning Assistant (GA2)

The FTMA Grad Assistant (GA2) dedicates an average of 15 hours per week working as a Graduate Classroom Learning Assistant to selected SCMA faculty. The GA2’s primary responsibilities include assisting with two undergraduate course sections each term. Responsibilities may include grading, leading small group discussions, meeting with/assisting students, tech support and light clerical work related to classes. In the event that course related work is light and the requisite hours are not being met, the GA2 may also be asked to assist with other clerical and research needs of the supervising faculty member(s).

  • Part-time (15 hours/week)
  • Compensation: $8,640 stipend

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Class Attendance

The GA2 must be able to attend every section of two undergraduate courses per semester, agreed upon with the course instructor.

Course Records

The GA2 will take attendance in each section and make note of things like student participation, electronic device usage, and/or other data that the faculty member deems necessary.

Grading

The GA2 will grade course materials under the supervision of the instructor. The instructor will provide thorough training in the required grading rubric before assigning grading to the GA2, and will supervise the results. Note that grading responsibilities may be heavier in some weeks than others, but the total hours required should average out to 12 hours per week.

Discussion & Lecture

At the instructor’s discretion, the GA2 may conduct small group discussions or offer a lecture in the course.

Research & Clerical Work

The GA2 may be tasked to assist with clerical or research tasks when their hours allow.

SCPR Graduate Assistant

The MA in Strategic Communication & Public Relations program seeks a part-time graduate assistant (GA) to support marketing, recruitment, event planning and day-to-day program operations. This position will report directly to the program director and assist with a variety of promotional and administrative tasks aimed at advancing the visibility, effectiveness and efficiency of the program. The GA will play a key role in coordinating communication strategies, organizing events and supporting day-to-day operations as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop social media content and digital campaigns under the supervision of program director and in partnership with MARCOMM, that promote the program and highlight student, faculty and alumni accomplishments
  • Design and update marketing materials, including flyers, presentations and digital content
  • Coordinate and assist in planning both virtual and in-person recruitment events, such as open houses, graduate fairs and admitted student days
  • Collaborate with the admissions and marketing teams under the supervision of program director and to align messaging and outreach
  • Assist with the planning and execution of internal program events, including speaker series, student orientations and networking opportunities
  • Collect and organize student testimonials, alumni spotlights and program updates for newsletters, blog posts and promotional use
  • Support the program director with administrative and operational tasks
  • Support updates to program webpages in partnership with MARCOMM and internal communication with current students and faculty

Knowledge & Skills Needed

  • Must be enrolled in SCMA's MA in Strategic Communication & PR graduate program
  • Strong writing, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently and efficiently
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital tools
  • Experience with event planning, marketing or administrative support is preferred

Equipment Room Graduate Assistant

The School of Communication, Media & the Arts at Sacred Heart University is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Graduate Assistant to manage the equipment room serving undergraduate students. This individual will oversee the checkout, maintenance, and organization of production equipment and provide guidance to students on best practices for use. The role reports directly to the Studio Manager and involves regular communication regarding equipment usage and condition.

  • Coordinate repairs or arrange vendor servicing with Studio Manager
  • Maintain a clean, organized and functional equipment room
  • Hire, train and supervise student workers
  • Update and manage inventory in the checkout system

Knowledge & Skills Needed

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Solid knowledge of camera, lighting and audio equipment
  • Ability to work independently and proactively
  • Effective communication and customer service skills
  • Physical ability to lift and transport equipment (up to 50 lbs)
  • Experience working in an academic or media production environment a plus
  • Graduate student in the School of Communication, Media & the Arts preferred
