Student Health Insurance Waive/Enroll

Full-Time Undergraduate Students

All Full-Time Undergraduate students must have health insurance and will be automatically enrolled in the University Health Insurance Program through Gallagher Student Health & Special Risk. Students with proof of comparable Health Insurance coverage within the State of Connecticut, may waive out of the University Health Insurance Program. The review of this requirement is completed on an annual/semi annual basis.

Requests for waiver for newly enrolled students for fall 2026 are being accepted: May 13, 2026, through August 1, 2027.

The cost is $3,252.00 for the health insurance coverage period of August 15, 2026, through August 14, 2027.

Students may elect to activate the University Health Insurance Program prior to automatic enrollment. To obtain the new health insurance card, log on to Gallagher's website, then select "I want to enroll."

Waive/Activate Health Insurance Program

1. Visit Gallagher's website
2. Login with the students SHU credentials (username and password)
3. Under "Student Access" menu on the left side of the screen, select "Full-Time Undergraduate Student Waive/Enroll"
   
   • To waive, select "I want to waive"
   • To activate, select "I want to enroll"
4. Complete the information on the next two screens
5. Select submit. Print or save your confirmation page as record of waiver/activation request.

Failure to waive out of the health insurance program will result in automatic enrollment. Your student account is billed $3,252.00, the cost of the insurance coverage period noted above. Approved waiver only will credit the noted billing amount.

Request for waiver or continued enrollment is required annually.

F-1 VISA International Graduate Students

Effective fall 2025, it is mandatory for all international F-1 visa graduate students to have the University health insurance plan. All enrolled graduate F1 visa students will be automatically enrolled in the health plan through ISO Student Health Insurance. Students will be enrolled for the duration of their academic program at SHU and the insurance fees will be posted on their student accounts.

Waivers will be provided in a very limited capacity. Travel insurance plans will not be accepted for waiver. Active coverage through home country embassy (e.g. SACM) or parent/spouse’s U.S. based employer plan is required. Instructions on the waiver process will be provided in an enrollment email from ISO in early fall 2025.

NOTE: the deadline to waive is firmly, September 15, 2026.

The insurance is a one-time annual enrollment required purchase. Once purchased the insurance will continue to provide coverage to you beyond your Sacred Heart University enrollment during the noted insurance coverage period.
