Becoming familiar with some common cultural traits and aspects of life in the U.S. can make it easier to settle in, build relationships, and feel at home.

Here are a few common characteristics of American campuses and everyday life.

• Informality—Americans often tend to be more casual. Some professors may ask you to call them by their first names.
• Valuing Time—Punctuality matters. Being on time, or slightly early, is appreciated in classes, meetings, and appointments.
• Independence—Self-sufficiency is encouraged, but so is asking questions and seeking support when you need it.
• Inclusivity—On campus, students are encouraged to share their perspectives, ask questions, and participate, regardless of their background.
• Directness—Americans tend to communicate plainly and directly, even when discussing challenging subjects or delivering difficult news.
• Personal Space and Privacy—Generally, people in the U.S. value space and privacy. Until you know someone well, it’s often best to avoid asking personal questions about topics such as age, income, or political views.
