Connect with peers to create a fulfilling college experience

Starting your journey at Sacred Heart University is an exciting opportunity to grow academically and personally. One of the best ways to feel connected, supported and inspired is by getting involved on campus. Whether you're an undergraduate or graduate student, SHU offers countless ways to engage with the community, explore your interests and build meaningful relationships.

Get a Head Start

Before arriving on campus, there are a few simple ways to start getting involved at SHU. Begin by browsing the University’s website to explore the variety of student clubs, academic organizations and service opportunities that are available. This early research can help you feel more prepared and intentional once you’re on campus. Following SHU on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn is another great way to stay informed about upcoming events, club spotlights and everyday campus life.

You can also reach out to your orientation leaders or student ambassadors you met during your admission process—many of them are involved in multiple areas of campus life and are more than happy to share insights, tips and recommendations.

Taking small steps like these before move-in can make the transition to SHU feel less overwhelming and help you quickly build connections.

Getting Involved on Campus

Once you arrive at SHU, there are plenty of opportunities to dive in and find your place in the campus community. Undergrad students can start by attending the Just SHU It involvement fair, held at the beginning of the semester. This event showcases a variety of student-run clubs, performance groups, academic organizations and volunteer programs—any of which you can join! It’s a great chance to explore your interests, ask questions and sign up for anything that sparks your curiosity.

You don’t need to commit to everything at once; joining just one or two clubs is a great way to start building connections. In addition, SHU’s First 50 Days initiative offers first-year students a series of events designed to help them get acclimated and involved. From social gatherings and service opportunities to workshops and themed events, these programs are a fun, low-pressure way to meet new people and start building your SHU experience from the very beginning.

Find Community Through Campus Events and Traditions

One of the easiest ways to get involved is by participating in campuswide events and traditions. Events such as Welcome Week, the President’s Gala, Homecoming and the annual tree lighting ceremony bring students together to celebrate, connect and have fun. Attending these signature SHU events not only helps you meet people outside of your classes but also builds lasting memories that make your time at SHU truly special. Don’t be afraid to show up solo—many students do—and it’s a great way to make new friends.

Student Involvement as a Graduate Student

Getting involved as a graduate student at SHU may look a little different from undergraduate life, but it’s just as valuable. There are professional organizations, leadership opportunities and academic clubs tailored specifically for graduate students. Grad student events are wide-ranging; students have the chance to get all glammed up and attend the annual Graduate Student Gala, they can connect with peers at fitness classes and there’s even frequent Bingo nights. Many academic programs host their own networking nights, cohort-based events and social events that allow grad students to connect with peers, faculty and professionals in their field. Graduate Student Advisory Committee also plays an active role on campus, representing graduate voices and coordinating events designed to build community and support your academic journey. Keep an eye on your email and University platforms for event announcements, because participating in even a few activities can make your time at SHU more engaging and rewarding.
