New course design blends technology, real-world learning and global experience to ‘future-proof’ graduates
Sacred Heart University has launched an updated Master of Business Administration (MBA) with full implementation in the spring of 2026, adding a required artificial intelligence or cybersecurity course, expanding AI integration across the curriculum and giving students new flexible options to meet core requirements.
The design prioritizes case-based instruction, expands global, real-client learning and builds on the program’s reputation as one of SHU’s flagship graduate offerings.
“When we decided to revamp the MBA program, we took a step back and asked ourselves the big questions,” said David Taylor, dean of the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology (WCBT). “What types of students are we serving, and what are they looking for? What competencies do employers want from our grads and how can we best prepare students for the jobs of today—as well as for tomorrow?”
An interdisciplinary task force of faculty and staff, drawing input from employers, alumni and students, set out to answer those questions. “The task force developed an innovative and flexible program that not only allows students to customize their coursework based on their level of experience, career goals and interests,” Taylor said, “but also in the mode that is most convenient for them—in person, online, hybrid or a mix of all three.”
The updated program adds new concentrations, including cybersecurity, and requires all students to complete either an AI or cybersecurity course. Faculty members are embedding AI-driven assignments and learning outcomes across multiple classes to ensure graduates are fluent in emerging business technologies. Sacred Heart also recently signed an agreement to provide ChatGPT Edu access for MBA students and faculty.
“Students want to choose their own adventure,” said Richard Pate, MBA program director. “We’re preserving what works while modernizing how students learn—adding AI, real cases and flexible pathways so they can focus on the skills that will matter most in their careers.”

In addition to technology, the curriculum emphasizes human-centered leadership. “For every dollar we invest in AI education, we should invest a dollar in human skills—leadership, judgment under uncertainty, communication,” said Brent French, associate dean of the WCBT. “It’s a double imperative for the next generation of leaders.”
The case-based approach engages students in solving real or simulated business problems through analysis, discussion and teamwork. To deepen global perspective, early cohorts will collaborate with Sacred Heart’s Dingle, Ireland, campus on applied projects, with additional partners expected in future years.
“The Jack Welch College of Business & Technology integrates traditional business education, essential interpersonal skills and cutting-edge technology to prepare our MBA students for a changing business environment,” Taylor said. “Our new curriculum is fresh, relevant and practical, delivered through case studies, discussions and real-world projects facilitated by our world-class faculty of academic scholars and experienced professionals.”
Current MBA students will complete their existing degree plans: the updated curriculum begins with new students admitted in the spring of 2026.
