The rapid emergence of new tech is opening new career opportunities

The exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning across many industries and disciplines has given new meaning to preparing for careers that don’t exist yet. Many of those jobs are already here, with new ones on the way.

AI jobs have been growing for more than a decade, even before the launch of generative AI platforms and other new technologies. The World Economic Forum recently forecasted that demand for AI and machine learning specialists will grow globally by 40%, meaning about 1 million new jobs will be created over the next several years.

That tremendous growth requires a workforce of professionals and business leaders with a solid foundation in fundamental business skills, as well as expertise in new technology to drive growth, forecast future opportunities, address challenges, leverage benefits, assess risks and embrace innovation. By teaming a master’s in business administration with specialized knowledge in AI and machine learning—one of the concentrations in Sacred Heart University’s MBA program—you’ll have the tools to get the most out of emerging technology, as well as the people who are using it.

Here are eight career tracks for those who are pursuing an MBA with a specialized knowledge of AI to consider:

Chief AI Officer

As chief AI officer, you’ll lead your organization’s big-picture strategy on implementation of AI and machine learning resources to meet business goals and objectives. You’ll need expertise in establishing a strategic vision, addressing ethical AI concerns, collaborating with other organizational leaders (such as chief data or information officer) and managing AI resources and investments, among other skills. The average annual salary range for this job is $158,309.

AI Project Manager

With a surge expected in AI implementation across sectors, industries and occupations, AI project managers with a solid understanding of AI technologies and how that translates to the objectives of a strategic plan will be crucial to steering these projects to completion. You’ll define and set goals; manage risks and costs; and identify and assign resources. You’ll solve problems as you lead and manage a team of experts, which could include engineers, data scientists and other specialists. The average annual salary range varies from about $99,000 to $108,000.

AI Product Manager

If you enjoy collaborating with a team to build and create new AI products, bring them to market and get them to consumers, you’ve found your niche! As more digital products are marketed to businesses and organizations of all sizes, AI product managers will be key in shaping product development and user experience. You’ll research AI trends to identify potential consumers and markets and translate their needs into product development and strategy. Teamwork is essential in this role, as you’ll work with engineers, developers, analysts and communications teams to get a product to market. The salary range for this job is about $150,000.

AI Strategy Consultant

Many forecasts predict that nearly every business will need expert advice on how best to integrate AI for better productivity, increased revenue and other benefits. As an AI strategy consultant, you’ll help others identify how to leverage AI technologies to achieve business goals and remain competitive. You’ll need to be an effective and clear communicator, with an understanding of AI technologies, as well as a good detective who can assess an organization’s readiness to embrace and implement AI strategies and the resources needed to make those strategies a success. The salary range is $72,000 to $117,000.

Technology Innovation Manager

Do you often look for new ways to solve challenges or do you spot opportunities and imagine the new tools and resources needed to embrace them? As a technology innovation manager, you’ll identify new and existing technological tools that will help your workplace to thrive and grow. Being open to change and having the ability to push past business as usual will be key skills in this role. You’ll provide practical, hands-on guidance for AI integration and work to integrate innovation into company culture. The average annual salary for this position is $135,212.

AI Policy Adviser

AI systems can pose privacy and security risks to companies and the clients they serve. Whether developing policies about collection and analysis of personal and sensitive data or adhering to laws and regulations about AI use, an AI policy adviser implements the strategies that keep companies compliant and plans for what’s needed for the future. The ability to understand the legislative and regulatory landscape, as well as future trends that will impact ethical, legal and business implications is a key skill. Broadly speaking, artificial intelligence policy jobs pay about $132,000 a year.

Data Governance Manager

Governing an organization’s data involves forming policies, monitoring and compliance. You’ll likely plan strategies for collecting data, setting standards, designing ways to gather data and managing risk around that collection. You’ll be an advocate for transparent and responsible AI policies. You’ll supervise and guide others about policies. And you’ll monitor the use of these technologies. You’ll also make sure the data you collect is properly recorded and maintained. The salary is about $114,000 a year.

AI Integration Specialist

An AI integration specialist can work in many fields, including education, manufacturing, health care, and marketing. You’ll understand AI models and algorithms and how they can solve business challenges, as well as help organizations pursue business opportunities. You’ll determine how AI initiatives can help employees manage workflow, hit deadlines and achieve business goals. You’ll have an eye on emerging AI technologies and how best to train and support your colleagues with existing and new tech tools. The annual salary is about $105,000.
