While yoga is an ancient form of exercise practiced for thousands of years, physical therapy has only recently learned of its value in patient treatment. This lab-based class will introduce participants to the benefits of yoga and the application of anatomy to different yoga poses. Participants will learn ways to modify traditional yoga poses to meet the needs of their patients.

Course Objectives

  • Review the general benefits of regular yoga practice (physical, emotional, psychological)
  • Practice several breathing techniques
  • Breakdown the anatomy of yoga poses commonly used as treatment positions
  • Practice chair yoga
  • Discuss the application of modifying yoga to adapt to patient needs with consideration for cardiopulmonary, neurologic and orthopedic impairment (use of props, seated, holding something sturdy, modifying the shape of the pose)
  • Collectively develop yoga interventions for a patient case
  • Have the opportunity to work with resources to develop a treatment session/activity integrating yoga for a current patient

Presenter

Diana Veneri, PT, Ed.D.

Diana is an associate professor at Sacred Heart University. She works clinically as a per diem therapist at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital. Diana was previously an associate professor at the University of Hartford. She graduated from Quinnipiac College (now University) in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy, from Southern Connecticut State University in 1996 with a master’s degree in exercise science and from the University of Hartford in 2007 with a doctoral degree in educational leadership. Diana was a board-certified Neurology Clinical Specialist (2008-2018). During that time, Diana served as an Item Writer 2010-2012 and then as a Clinical Content Expert (2012-2018) for the Neurology Board Examination, Specialization Academy of Content Experts. She is an associate editor for the Journal of Physical Therapy Education. Diana is a 500-hour yoga instructor with an additional certification in yin yoga. She offers weekly classes.
