Global Experiences is committed to advancing international education. We have been providing life-changing internship abroad programs and professional experiences for university students and young professionals since 2001.

The Global Experiences staff is comprised of world travelers who are fortunate to have lived, worked, or studied overseas. Our travels have inspired us and shaped our lives, and our shared love for exploring new places and immersing ourselves in foreign cultures is why we all work here. Our team of 30+ spans 7 nationalities in 10 locations around the world. These locations include Barcelona, Berlin, Florence, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Sydney, and San Jose.

Through our highly customized international internship and study abroad programs, we are able to encourage and inspire other young people to pack their bags, hop on a plane, and do as we’ve done. It’s our way of paying it forward. In today’s increasingly globalized economy, international experience is everything. Our programs provide the opportunity for participants to have the overseas adventure they want while simultaneously getting the experience they need. It’s the best of both worlds!

Global Experiences is a part of the American Institute For Foreign Study’s (AIFS) family of programs.

You will earn either 3 or 6 academic credits as a part of this program. Please discuss your credit load with your academic advisor to determine which load is right for you. You will be charged for either 3 or 6 credits, dependent on your selection.

The course will either count as an internship course or an independent study in your major, dependent on the requirements for and course offerings within your major.

Internship Course

You are responsible for following your department's policies and procedures for internship approval, registration, and completion. Additionally, you will need to find a faculty member to supervise your course. Identifying a faculty member who is willing to supervise your course is your responsibility. The internship course will count towards your general graduation total. The course will also factor into your cumulative Grade Point Average (course is not available for Pass/Fail).

Independent Study

You are responsible for following all SHU rules and regulations related to participating in an independent study course. Additionally, you will need to find a faculty member to supervise your course. Identifying a faculty member who is willing to supervise your course is your responsibility. The independent study will count towards your general graduation total. The course will also factor into your cumulative Grade Point Average (course is not available for Pass/Fail).

Only the student who has officially declared a major and who has successfully completed at least 15 credits will be able to enroll. A maximum of 6 credits of independent study or individualized instruction is permitted toward the baccalaureate degree. Independent study requires a packet approved by the advisor, instructor, department chair, and dean. Ordinarily, no student will be permitted to take more than one individualized course per semester and more than two individualized courses to fulfill degree requirements.

You will need to find a faculty member to supervise your course. Identifying a faculty member who is willing to supervise your course is your responsibility. You will complete an Internship Supervisor questionnaire as a part of your application materials. You must ensure this faculty member has agreed to be your supervisor prior to the completion of the Supervisor questionnaire.

The housing will differ for each location ranging from shared apartments to student dorms. Global Experiences provides housing that is secure and as centrally located within the city as possible.

Housing is not included as part of your SHU study abroad program fees. Housing is paid directly to Global Experiences.

Included in your internship program are professional, cultural and social excursions designed to connect you with your host city and create hands-on opportunities for learning and community engagement.

At the end of the program, we conclude with an exit orientation, mock interview training, and a fabulous farewell celebration! Global Experiences is committed to maximizing your experience throughout the program.

Students must be in good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing with the university in order to be considered for the Global Experiences summer internship program.

At Global Experiences, we guarantee an internship to all participants accepted into our internship programs. Admission to the program is based on a combination of relevant college or university level course work, relevant work experience and an assessment of maturity and readiness for a professional abroad experience.

We work with applicants on a one-to-one basis to understand their skills, talents, and expectations. By getting to know your academic background, career objectives, language proficiency, and overall expectations for your time abroad, we are able to place you in a dynamic work environment providing real-world work experience.

Once a good match is found, all interns will interview by phone or skype with their supervisor before the placement is confirmed. When you arrive on location and you start at your internship we will help support you and ensure you make the most of your placement including on-site check-ins and coaching.

Scholarships are a great way to support the cost of your study abroad experience. In an effort to make a study abroad experience more accessible, the SHU Office of Study Abroad prepared a list of scholarships and financial resources. Please note that this is not a conclusive list but it will help you start your search process. Global Engagement encourages you to apply and take advantage of as many relevant scholarship opportunities as possible. Access more information about Scholarships and Financial Aid here.

Students in the Thomas More Honors Program are eligible to use a one-time study abroad scholarship of $500 towards the cost of their program. Students will need to apply for this scholarship post-acceptance within their study abroad accounts.

Please speak with to determine how your aid package will apply towards studying abroad.

After first getting accepted through SHU on a rolling admissions basis, you will need to apply through Global Experiences and work with one of their admissions counselors.
