Program Description

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) promotes students' understanding of global health, education, and social justice issues and works to build cultural competence through interprofessional service learning with the College of Health Professions.

Each year, SLP students join occupational and physical therapy teams in a week-long, service-learning program to the Greater Panchoy Valley surrounding the colonial city of La Antigua, Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Serving in interprofessional teams, SLP students provide language and literacy enrichment and/or hearing screenings and hearing aid services to children and families in various schools and community settings.

It is not necessary to be bilingual to participate, but knowledge of Spanish is beneficial.

Our teams stay in the historic town of La Antigua. Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is full of colonial churches and old ruins. Antigua is set-up to host tourists with a variety of activities, attractions and restaurants. Stroll down Fifth Avenue under the famous Santa Catalina arch during your free time or wander down to the artisans market to purchase an assortment of souvenirs.

This service-learning experience is open to anyone currently enrolled as a graduate student in the SLP program. The program will provide supervised clinical hours to students for their work with the people in the rural area of the Panchoy Valley. Under the supervision of an audiologist, SLP students will work directly with faculty and students at Las Voces del Silencio (LAVOSI), a school for the deaf, to provide audiological testing, hearing aid programming and fitting and aural rehabilitation materials. SLP students will also work inter-professionally with PT and OT students and faculty to provide care to underserved communities within their homes, community clinics, and at a wheelchair distribution center.

Lodging, located at Posada el Antaño, is included in the program fee. Free Wi-Fi is also available. The hotel's information is as follows:
