Living off campus provides greater independence, but students should take steps to protect themselves and their property.

Stay Safe at Home

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions
  • Always lock doors and windows
  • Do not allow unknown individuals into your residence
  • Keep valuables out of sight and secure
  • Ensure exterior lights are working properly
  • Consider using a doorbell camera or other security device if permitted by your landlord

Stay Safe While Out

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions
  • Walk with friends whenever possible, especially at night
  • Stay in well-lit, populated areas
  • Trust your instincts and leave situations that feel unsafe

Protect Yourself and Your Property

  • Keep your phone charged and readily available
  • Do not share keys, access codes, or personal information
  • Lock your vehicle and remove valuables from plain view
  • Be cautious when using social media and avoid sharing your location publicly

Social Gatherings

  • Look out for friends and roommates
  • Never leave drinks unattended
  • Plan safe transportation to and from before attending social events
  • Call for help if a situation becomes unsafe

Remember

  • If you see suspicious activity or feel unsafe while off campus, call 911 or your local police immediately
  • Incidents that occur at your off-campus residence need to be reported to your local police. They can also be reported to Public Safety as an additional step
  • Sacred Heart Public Safety is also available 24 hours a day to assist students with safety concerns and can help connect you with local emergency services when needed
  • Download the SHU Safe App and utilize the three (3) main functions:
    • Emergency call (local police or SHU DPS)
    • IReports
    • Friend Watch
