Early Arrival Housing
Only students with prior approval are permitted to gain access or reside in on-campus housing during the intersession time (July 28, 2026-August 29, 2026). You must sign up at least 4 days in advance of your arrival to be approve to come early. The last day to sign up for early arrival is Monday August 24, 2026.
Our office, in conjunction with Facilities & Construction, will do all that is possible to have apartments and rooms ready for students for early arrival. However, due to renovations and basic upkeep, some students may have temporary housing until they can officially move into their permanent room. You will be notified if this is the case and we will work to minimize the time you are in temporary housing.
All residential students requesting to arrive early need to register online regardless of your status as an athlete, pre-fall program participant, or University sponsored group.
Only students who fall under the following categories will not be charged as long as they arrive on their approved arrival date:
- Varsity athletes for fall pre-season (football, golf, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, women's rugby, field hockey, men's and women's cross country, cheerleading, dance team) with approval from Athletics – dates are pre-assigned. Any student needing to arrive before the assigned date are responsible for the early arrival fee.
- International students without a local host family (no more than 48 hours before official move-in)
- Students who live more than six hours away by car (no more than 24 hours before official move in)
- Students who need to stay in the local area for academic work including athletic training, internships, and lab experiments with prior approval from your professor or academic department
- Band, dance, theater arts students who are required to stay on campus for official training periods with prior approval from their advisor
- Student Life pre-approved programs with permission of Associate Dean of Students (student ambassadors, orientation leaders, Student Union managers, pre-fall leaders, etc.)
- All University-sponsored pre-fall programs
Students are not permitted to arrive prior to their group's approved early arrival date unless traveling from a distance greater than 6 hours by car or are an international student.
Students who cannot move in on their building's move-in date can request to arrive up to 2 days prior with a charge of $50 per night. Once a student is granted access to their room, they will be charged, regardless if they actually reside in the room or not.
Any violation of the student conduct code during the intercession period will result in the immediate termination of the applicants early arrival without refund. Students will not be allowed to return until their official move in day. Coaches are ultimately responsible for the conduct of their players. All residence halls are dry during intercession housing and overnight guests are prohibited.
Lofting beds in any area will not be done until the official move-in days. Go to the lobby of your building (Merton/Seton/Roncalli) on the designated move-in day to sign up to have your bed(s) lofted.
Students will receive an email to their SHU email account when early arrival sign ups are available.
You will receive an automated confirmation email upon completion of the early arrival request form. If there are questions about the reason you selected or the date you selected, you will be contacted via your SHU email. Otherwise, you will receive move-in instructions no later than 48 hours prior to your requested early arrival date.
Returning Students Requesting Early Arrival
To accommodate the incoming first-year student move-in on Thursday, August 27, and Friday, August 28, 2026, returning and transfer students moving into non-freshman areas are not permitted to request early arrival during the following times:
- Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Friday, August 28, 2026, from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
These students are strongly encouraged to find other times to arrive onto campus outside of these above times, as no early arrival move-ins will be granted during these times. No exceptions.
Reminder: During early arrival housing, not all services on campus are fully functional. We do have limited staff within the halls during the early arrival and pre-season time period and Public Safety is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
