Community Engagement hosts the annual SHU National Summer Service Challenge to engage students, faculty, staff and alumni in remote service opportunities in their home communities during the summer of 2025.

How Does the National Summer Service Challenge Work?

All members of the SHU community are welcome to participate in virtual service opportunities in their home communities from June 1 to August 15, 2025. In recognition of the graduating class, our goal is to record 2,025 total hours of service.

Activities will include virtual civic education and social action projects, as well as location-specific, hands-on volunteer opportunities. Participants living in the same cities and towns may work together in sharing their time and talents to make a difference in their communities, in projects coordinated by Community Engagement. It is encouraged for participants to log their service hours so the University can track the impact on a local and national level.

The first 100 to sign up will receive a free SHU Summer Service Challenge t-shirt!

Local Opportunities

Participants living in the Greater Bridgeport area are encouraged to utilize the GivePulse platform to search and sign up for local service opportunities. Local alumni and friends can email communityengagement@sacredheart.edu for access to local opportunities.

Remote Activities

Participants joining from their home communities outside of SHU can find a list of civic learning and social action activities on our website.
