We sat down with Michael Dias ’14, MBA ’20, an athletic trainer with Hartford Athletic in the USL Championship, to learn how the principles of injury prevention, recovery, and performance management apply at the highest levels of international soccer.

For Dias, any injury that sidelines a player for an extended period is a concern. The goal is always to keep athletes healthy and performing at their highest level, which is why injury prevention sits at the center of the job.
"Due to the high sprinting demands of soccer, hamstring strains and other soft tissue injuries are among the most common injuries we see," Dias explained.
To get ahead of these problems, Dias and his team evaluate Hartford Athletic players early in the preseason to identify potential risk factors. They assess biomechanical movement patterns and muscular deficiencies, then build individualized programs to improve strength, mobility, and overall movement quality. Catching these issues early helps reduce the likelihood of injury once the season begins.
What Advances in Injury Prevention Have Emerged Since the Last World Cup?
According to Dias, the biggest shift has been a stronger emphasis on monitoring player workloads. That means tracking minutes played, training loads, and overall physical demands throughout the season.
"The use of wearable GPS technology allows the sports medicine team to measure running distance, sprint volume, speed, and other performance metrics during training and matches," Dias said. "This valuable data helps us assess a player's fatigue level throughout the week and make informed decisions regarding training and recovery."
Recovery management has also become a major focus. With more matches and heavier travel demands, sports medicine staff now monitor sleep quality, nutrition, hydration, travel fatigue, and mental well-being. All of these factors feed into individualized recovery plans that maximize performance and reduce injury risk.
How Do Athletic Trainers Prepare Players for Unfamiliar Stadiums?
Travel is a constant in professional soccer, so preparation often starts days before kickoff. Teams frequently arrive at the host stadium early to train on the competition field, helping players adjust to the playing surface, the stadium environment, and overall match conditions.
Climate and geography add another layer. Depending on the location, Dias and his team help players acclimatize to weather, altitude, and time zone changes.
"Since the United States spans multiple time zones, adjusting to local time is an important part of preparation," Dias said. "We encourage players to gradually adapt their daily routines, including sleep and meal schedules, to the time zone where the match will be played. This helps optimize performance and recovery leading up to competition."
What Would be the Most Challenging Part of Working a Major International Event?
"For a FIFA World Cup, many players arrive after completing a demanding 10-month club season in which they may have already played 35 or more matches with limited time off," Dias said.
Teams get only a short preparation window before entering a high-intensity tournament with just three guaranteed group-stage matches. From a sports medicine perspective, the job is to make sure players recover effectively between games despite those tight windows. That requires constant monitoring through GPS data, wellness questionnaires, and daily assessments.
"By evaluating each player's physical and mental readiness, we can make informed decisions that prioritize both player health and performance throughout the tournament," Dias said. "Ultimately, the challenge is finding the right balance between maximizing performance and minimizing injury risk during one of the most demanding competitions in the sport."
