Students Give Back To Community During Annual CURTIS Week
Thirty students volunteer, spend time in local nonprofits and congregations across the state
Several Sacred Heart University students cut their winter breaks short to participate in SHU’s annual CURTIS (Community Understanding and Reflection Through Inner-city Service) Week.
The week, named after SHU’s founder, Bishop Walter W. Curtis, is filled with engagement and immersion in the Bridgeport community. Thirty students were housed in a local church and spent each day volunteering at non-profit organizations. They organized food pantries, clothing donations and helped with paperwork and general cleanup of the facilities. Each night the students visited a new congregation in the state and reflected on the day’s events.
Students said the experience makes an impact on them and increases their desire to volunteer and give back to the community. They also said it’s also a great way to make long-lasting friendships with like-minded, socially-conscious students.
