Students SCORE Tips from Seasoned Business Pros
SCORE, nation’s largest network of volunteer business experts, offers crucial insights for success
Sacred Heart University announces a new, one-on-one mentorship program that connects student entrepreneurs with retired professionals who provide sage advice for succeeding in business.
Students working toward SHU’s master of business administration degree and undergraduate students in the innovation and entrepreneur minor will be paired with members of SCORE Fairfield County, which represents the nation’s largest network of volunteer, expert business mentors.
The program kicks off Wednesday, April 27, with a panel discussion on “An Introduction to SCORE and What It Can Do for Your Entrepreneurial Career.” The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:30 p.m. at the iHub, SHU’s innovative, co-working space with Verizon, on West Campus. Registration is required.
“Starting a new business is a very complicated process,” said Jeanine Andreassi, professor and chair of the management department at SHU’s Jack Welch College of Business & Technology (WCBT). “There are a lot of moving parts, and students at this stage can use a lot of guidance. Having a devoted mentor on the outside who has connections and can offer advice on funding, feasibility, business plan development and networking is a highly valuable opportunity.”
Mentors from SCORE can advise students and entrepreneurs on creating an LLC, securing insurance and using social media and digital marketing to achieve business goals, according to Tim Ryan, SCORE education committee chair. “New entrepreneurs, regardless of their age, can benefit from accessing a mentor,” he said. “A mentor can provide the direction and support to help you complete your business plan and stay on track. New business owners often have a passion for their product or service but are overwhelmed by the other aspects of starting a business. SCORE mentors don’t do the work for you but can provide education, clarity and encouragement so you are not alone on the journey.”
Three noted speakers will participate on the April 27 panel, discussing SCORE, entrepreneurship and the influence of social media and direct marketing on small businesses:
- Brian Baxendale has managed sales forces of several hundred people, has been involved in startup businesses in vending, retail services, software and hardware, and he has worked in leadership for Fortune 500 companies worldwide.
- Maryann Croce is a business coach and speaker who has owned a business since 1999. Certified in the 90 Day Year, a business development program, she has experience in banking, retail, construction and the automotive industry.
- Kate Berg has more than 25 years of experience in technology and strategic marketing, with expertise in helping companies grow, go public and secure venture capital funding. She built two social media and mobile-based businesses before 2008.
The trio will offer students and entrepreneurs in the community real-world insights on the current business landscape, according to Michael Larobina, WCBT acting dean. “Our undergraduate and graduate programs prepare students to lead in a global economy,” Larobina said. “We nurture an entrepreneurial mindset in all our students and know this partnership will benefit those hoping to start their own businesses and make a positive contribution to the community.”
Space for the panel discussion is limited. Visit the WCBT SCORE webpage to register.
