SHU Student Accepts Public Relations Internship as Representative to United Nations
Alexa Moyer will attend briefings and disseminate information
Sacred Heart University graduate student Alexa Moyer ’23 recently accepted an internship as a youth representative for the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) to the United Nations (UN). A student in SHU’s strategic communications & public relations (SCPR) program, she will be responsible for sharing news and information from the UN with IPRA’s member base.
Moyer earned her bachelor’s degree in legal studies with minors in political science and professional writing from the University of New Haven in January. She is set to graduate from Sacred Heart’s SCPR program this month.
She heard about the UN internship through Lori Bindig Yousman, School of Communication, Media & the Arts professor and associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Arts & Sciences. Moyer had expressed her interest in politics and government affairs, and Bindig Yousman kept an eye out for related internships. Bindig Yousman heard about the opportunity and put Moyer’s name forward based on her interests and outstanding work in the SCPR program.
“I knew this position would be up Alexa’s alley and that she was more than prepared to take on such an important role,” said Bindig Yousman. “This is just one of many examples of how well-rounded our SCPR students are.”
Beginning Jan. 1, Moyer will attend briefings on topics such as freedom of the press, youth issues and other human rights matters. She will take notes and forward the information to UN members and the IPRA. She says her previous internships and SHU’s SCPR program have prepared her for the role.
“My experiences have given me the tools to understand different viewpoints and to relay information in an effective way,” said Moyer.
SHU’s SCPR program is designed to help students acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in various communication industries. Through hands-on experience, students learn to communicate effectively across media platforms in an ethical and socially responsible manner.
