Members of SHUs esports teamSacred Heart University’s academic esports program hosted its sixth annual Connecticut Esports Showcase on April 18 & 19 at the Toussaint Hall Esports Lab. Each year, the tournament brings together Connecticut’s premier collegiate esports programs to compete in the two-day event.

This year, participating schools included Albertus Magnus College, Fairfield University, Post University, Sacred Heart University, Southern Connecticut State University, Stony Brook University, University of Connecticut, University of Hartford, and University of New Haven. More than 131 students from these nine colleges competed in five games: Overwatch, Fortnite, Teamfight Tactics, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Valorant.

Students enrolled in the Capstone for Esports course for the esports minor took what they’ve learned in previous classes and designed and executed a statewide esports event. Students managed various aspects of the event, including marketing, social media/content creation, tournament operations, venue management, and sponsorship.

“Across the esports ecosystem, collegiate esports show immense promise. Many universities once viewed esports as a novelty or differentiator in the admissions process, but now it is increasingly seen as a significant aspect for many students,” said Sam Schelfhout, assistant professor of sport management and director of the club esports team at SHU. "It is amazing to see the investment that Sacred Heart has made into this space, and we have seen extraordinary interest in our club and across campus as a result.”

In spring 2025, SHU opened a dedicated location in Toussaint Hall for the team to practice and host events. “Esports is a powerful community-builder, especially for students who might not otherwise get involved on campus, and it is always inspiring to see students from universities, colleges, and high schools across the state come together and bond over a shared passion,” said Schelfhout.

There were two overall winners, the University of New Haven came in first place and Fairfield University came in second.
