Students shine on international stage that included emerging dance artists from nearly 35 countries
Sacred Heart University’s dance program recently brought 23 of its company members to Bari, Italy, to participate in the World Dance Movement (WDM) International Festival.
The event brings together emerging dance artists from nearly 35 countries for a transformative week of professional training, creative collaboration and live performance. According to the WDM’s website, the festival is a dynamic celebration of global talent, where dancers unite to share their passion and elevate their artistry.
Of the 23 Sacred Heart dancers who attended the intensive weeklong event, five returned with scholarships recognizing their talent and dedication. Rachel Minto ’27 was awarded a full scholarship to the Iwanson International Dance Summer/Winter Course in Switzerland, along with one month of unlimited virtual classes through The SPACE TV, a global platform for professional dance training. Kelsey Jacobsen ’25 earned full scholarships to both the Quorum Dance Company Summer Workshop in Lisbon, Portugal, and the Tanec Bez Hranic Summer Edition in Prague.
Katie Plitt ’25 also received a full scholarship to the Tanec Bez Hranic Summer Edition, and Moira Larson ’28 earned a full scholarship to the Iwanson International Dance Intensive. Maura Walters ’25 was honored by acclaimed choreographers Sabatino D’Eustacchio and Federica Angelozzi with a one-month virtual scholarship to The SPACE TV. The scholarships equate to more exciting opportunities for SHU dancers to continue their growth on the international stage.
“We are continually impressed and proud of our dance program members at SHU. They possess undeniable talent and dedication,” said Taylor Krebuszewski, assistant director of dance. “Each participant on the trip gave 110% of their artistry and love for dance to the World Dance Movement International Festival. Their accomplishments in the classroom and on stage are truly spectacular and inspiring.”
Additionally, Jacobsen, Plitt and Sydney Bosma ’26 represented SHU in the WDM Dancer of the Year competition, a highlight of the event that drew top-level dancers from across the globe. Jacobsen competed with a contemporary solo, Plitt brought a self-choreographed modern solo to the stage and Bosma performed a jazz solo. Jacobsen distinguished herself by advancing to the competition’s final round, showcasing technical excellence and expressive power in an international arena.
