SHU Alum Returns to U.S. Open for Second Year

Sport management and marketing graduate joins tournament staff as women's locker room attendant

Emily Pomerico ‘26, a recent graduate of Sacred Heart University's sport management and marketing programs is returning to the U.S. Open Tennis Championships for her second consecutive year, where she will serve as a women's locker room attendant at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

Pomerico's role officially began on August 18 with staff training, as players were welcomed to the facility on August 21. Throughout the tournament, she will be responsible for player care and comfort, managing laundry, stocking supplies, and maintaining a clean and safe environment in the women's locker room.

She first applied for the position during the winter of her junior year at SHU while simultaneously pursuing summer internships. Her interest in working in sports was shaped in part by the relationships she made while studying at Sacred Heart.

“I was drawn to Sacred Heart because of all the connections to different sports organizations that alumni were working in,” Pomerico said. “My time at SHU helped me prepare for my career in the sports industry through the knowledgeable professors and extracurriculars that allowed me to develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and time-management skills.”

Since graduating, Pomerico has built a growing portfolio of sports industry experience. In addition to her work at the U.S. Open, she holds a part-time role with the New York Mets as a promotions team member and will begin a community relations internship with the New York Islanders this fall.

For Pomerico, returning to the U.S. Open carries both personal and professional significance.

“The U.S. Open is one of the biggest sporting events in the world,” she said. “Being able to contribute to the tournament and learn from professionals who have experience at this level is another step in building my career in sports.”

As she continues to build her career in the sports industry, Pomerico said the opportunity allows her to continue building on the skills and experiences she developed as a student. Her time at Sacred Heart gave her the chance to explore different areas of the industry while gaining experience that she now carries into her work.

“I'm thankful to Sacred Heart for giving me the foundation and opportunities that helped me get to where I am today,” Pomerico said. “My time at SHU allowed me to explore different areas of the sports industry while developing skills I would need for my career and beyond.”
