School of Computing & Engineering Launches Construction Management Degree

New program prepares graduates for high-demand careers through hands-on, industry-aligned education

Sacred Heart University launched a new Bachelor of Science in construction management, giving students a direct path into a rapidly growing industry.

Housed within the School of Computing & Engineering in the College of Arts & Sciences, the program combines engineering principles, business strategy, and applied field experience to prepare graduates.

The construction management program arrives at a critical moment for the industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it projects that approximately 46,800 construction manager job positions open annually, with median annual earnings exceeding $106,000. Construction management is also widely recognized as a field where human judgment, site leadership, and physical presence remain irreplaceable. This is a durable career path for graduates entering a rapidly changing workforce.

“Construction management offers graduates strong job prospects, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work on projects that have a lasting impact on their communities,” said Kevin Bowlyn, the construction management program director.“

Students in the program will develop core competencies in project safety, estimating, cost control, scheduling, contracts, risk management, sustainability, and digital construction technologies, Bowlyn said. The curriculum requires a minor in business to ensure students are equipped to manage complex projects and lead teams with confidence. Small class sizes and personalized faculty mentorship further support students’ academic and professional development.

“Construction management is the process of planning, coordinating, and overseeing a construction project from concept to completion,” Bowlyn said. “Construction managers are the leaders who bring together everyone involved in a project, including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients, to ensure the project is completed safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with the design specifications.”

The program is aligned with the American Council for Construction Education, a prestigious accrediting body that ensures curricula meet the highest industry standards. Faculty bring extensive real-world expertise into the classroom, bridging academic preparation with the realities of modern construction.

SHU’s location near major metropolitan markets in the Northeast gives students direct access to regional employers and internship opportunities across commercial, residential, and public sector projects. Dual degree options are also available, allowing motivated students to pursue graduate-level credentials alongside their undergraduate studies.
