Connecticut students, parents and teachers gathered at Sacred Heart University's Edgerton Theatre April 6 to participate in Connecticut History Day.

Sacred Heart hosted the event for the fourth straight year, welcoming more than 500 middle school and high school students from Fairfield, Westport, Norwalk, Trumbull and Stamford.

Students were allowed to work alone or in groups  on a project in one of five categories—exhibits, documentaries, websites, papers or performances—based on their research.

“Hosting this event brought many people and groups around campus together to provide a meaningful educational experience to the high school and middle school students who competed. It also gave us the opportunity to acquaint them and their families with our beautiful campus,” said Charlotte Gradie, Department of History chair and professor.

After the presentations, the Coastal Chordsmen barbershop chorus from Trumbull provided entertainment before the awards ceremony.

The judging panel, which comprised educators, historians and history-lovers, chose the top three winners to move on to the next stage of competition: the Connecticut History Day State Contest May 4 at Central Connecticut State University. Those students also received ribbons from Fairfield State Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey and State Senator Tony Hwang.
