Professor Named American Academy of Nursing Fellow

National nursing honor recognizes leadership in research, education, and health care

Sacred Heart University's LuAnn Etcher, associate dean for research and scholarship in the Dr. Susan L. Davis, R.N., & Richard J. Henley College of Nursing, has been selected for fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing, one of nursing’s highest honors recognizing nursing leaders whose work has advanced health care, education, research, leadership, and policy.

The American Academy of Nursing is a national honorific society and policy organization composed of more than 3,400 nursing leaders. The academy awards fellowship to nurses whose sustained contributions have advanced the profession and improved health at the national and/or global levels.

“Personally, this recognition is deeply meaningful,” Etcher said. “Nursing has shaped my life’s work, and to be recognized by peers and leaders across the profession is both humbling and affirming. It represents not just an individual achievement, but a reflection of the mentors, colleagues, students, clinical partners, and communities who have influenced and supported my career.”

The recognition reflects Etcher’s longstanding commitment to advancing nursing research and education, supporting students, and contributing to the future of health care.

“This honor is a well-deserved recognition of Dr. Etcher," said Karen Daley, dean of the Davis & Henley College of Nursing. “She leads our faculty with her unique talents and expertise to achieve a higher level of research and scholarship in the discipline of nursing. She is well known across our profession and a sought-out expert in her field. Her caring and compassionate demeanor while maintaining the highest standards makes her a role model for our faculty.”

The honor also reflects the strength of Sacred Heart’s nursing program, which prepares nurses who are clinically competent, intellectually curious, compassionate, ethical, and ready to lead in today's health care environment.

“Most importantly, I hope students see this recognition as evidence that nurses can have an influence far beyond the bedside,” said Etcher. “Nurses shape systems, educate future professionals, lead organizations, conduct research, advocate for communities, and influence policy.”

As a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Etcher will collaborate with nursing leaders across the country while contributing to the academy’s work in health policy, leadership, innovation, science, and health equity. She plans to continue advancing nursing research and education.

“This recognition is not just about one person,” Etcher said. “It is about the power of nursing and the impact nurses have in every setting where health and human dignity matter. I hope this recognition serves as encouragement to our students, faculty, and staff to continue pursuing excellence, asking important questions, leading with compassion, and believing that nursing has the power to transform lives and systems.”

Etcher will be formally inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing during the organization’s annual Health Policy Conference this fall.
