New Advancement VP Committed to Unearthing Potential
Rick Henderson joins the University with decades of experience in philanthropy, education advancement and donor relations
For Richard “Rick” Henderson, helping others find their true potential has always been his calling. A veteran of educational institutions, Henderson has dedicated much of his professional life to philanthropy and helping schools provide support to their most crucial stakeholders: students.
In his new role as associate vice president of University advancement & philanthropic campaigns for the Pioneer community, he will support students in a variety of new ways, through the development of fundraising campaigns, the cultivation of donor relationships and the oversight of strategic giving initiatives. Engaging with Sacred Heart’s alumni, parents, friends and corporate partners will be an important opportunity. The University is dedicated to increasing the philanthropic resources for its most deserving students.
Before joining SHU, Henderson worked in advancement at Choate Rosemary Hall, Fairfield Prep and most recently the Canterbury School. His experience has instilled in him the mindset needed to succeed in this role.
“Rick is an extremely talented, motivated and passionate professional,” said Paul J. Sutera, senior vice president of University advancement. “I have complete confidence that Rick will utilize his experience to meet this role head-on and trust that his work will invigorate and inspire the SHU community for generations to come.”
In a question-and-answer interview, Henderson shared how he will help others succeed in his new role.
What are the key responsibilities of this position?
In my role overseeing day-to-day fundraising initiatives within University advancement, I help drive philanthropic efforts that expand opportunities for students, faculty and programs across SHU. While I remain actively engaged as a frontline fundraiser, a significant part of my impact comes from mentoring and empowering our team of development professionals. By fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability and strategic focus, I will help ensure that our collective efforts not only meet ambitious philanthropic goals but also strengthen the University's ability to serve its mission and deepen its connection with donors, alumni and families.
What inspired you to take this position?
For many years, I considered moving from the independent school marketplace to higher education. Living close to SHU and seeing its growth trajectory intrigued me. When I learned about the opportunity for coaching and mentoring a good group of fundraisers, it was an easy decision to match my talents with great people at an exciting institution.
How will your experience help you in this position?
I’ve said many times that the fundamentals of advancement work don’t vary too much, whether it’s higher education, independent schools, health care or social service. The only differences are the numbers and data. The size of an alumni base or number of internal staff members on your team can vary, but normal day-to-day operations are very similar. So, collaborating with our external constituents is the same as it’s been throughout my career. I know several alumni and families from my time in the area, and I am encouraged to visit and learn about the Sacred Heart community.
What are some goals you hope to achieve in this new role?
My main goal is to help. I’m here to serve, and I want our office and all our gift officers to raise more resources so we can generate more opportunities for all in the SHU community. This University is made up of people and programs. It’s our collective team’s job to increase the resources for both of those. While achieving that, I hope to build great relationships with everyone at SHU and offer my abilities to help where I can. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I’m very comfortable with my abilities. My job here is simple: to help everyone achieve their goals as we build a culture of philanthropy that everyone can be proud to call their own.
What attracted you to working at SHU?
Working for a humble, hardworking group of people at an energetic, exciting, growth-minded University attracted me to Sacred Heart. When I had the chance to meet my current colleagues through the interviewing process, along with community members around campus, it became clear that there’s work to be done, but it’s also important to reflect on the amazing work that has already been accomplished. What separates the good schools from the others is the continued pursuit of the next. That is why I am so proud and passionate to get started here.
