How to Study Smarter, Not Harder
Tips on how to study effectively and efficiently in college
Studying smarter means making the most of your time and energy, not just putting in more hours. With the right strategies, you can boost your focus, improve retention and feel more prepared without the stress.
Find a Quiet, Comfortable Environment
Creating a calm space allows you to study more efficiently and retain information better. This helps minimize stress and keeps your mind clear, making it easier to focus on the material. When distractions are reduced, you can maintain concentration for longer periods and absorb information more effectively. If you want to get out of your room to study, SHU’s Ryan Matura Library is an excellent resource and a great spot to be productive. Plug in your computer, pull out your books and notebooks, and you’ll be well on your way to acing your exam.

Apply NowTake Breaks
Taking regular breaks during study sessions helps prevent burnout and keeps your mind fresh. Short pauses allow you to process information better and improve overall focus when you return to work. You may want to try the Pomodoro Technique, a time management method to help you stay focused. All you need is a timer. Start studying and after 25 minutes, take a five-minute break. After four 25-minute sessions, you can take a longer break of about 15 to 30 minutes. Try it out!
Set Specific Goals
Before each study session, set clear, achievable goals to guide your focus. Breaking down material into smaller chunks makes studying less overwhelming and helps track your progress. SHU’s Office of Student Advising & Success can help you establish goals, work on time management and perfect your study habits and strategies.
Ask for Help
If you find yourself struggling to focus or fully understand the subject matter at hand, don’t suffer in silence. Reach out and ask for help. Visit your professor during their office hours or send them an email asking for guidance. SHU’s Center for Teaching & Learning has tutors who can assist you in whatever subject you can’t seem to wrap your head around. Sign up for a spot today. Or a learning specialist in the Office of Student Accessibility could be a valuable resource for you.
Spread Out Your Study Sessions
Don’t wait until the last minute to cram; spacing out your study sessions over days or weeks helps improve long-term retention. Consistent review of material over time strengthens your memory, reduces stress before exams and makes studying more manageable, so you feel more confident when exam day arrives.
Stay Organized
Keep your notes clear and well-organized by using headings, bullet points and color coding. This makes it easier to find key information quickly and aids in the recall of information during review sessions.
Stay Positive and Motivated
Maintaining a positive mindset is key to successful studying. Remind yourself why you’re working hard and focus on your goals. Celebrate small wins along the way, surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your efforts and try to stay flexible if things don’t go perfectly.
