College of Education Is Counseling Journal’s New Home
Professor Franc Hudspeth is editor-in-chief of the quarterly, online publication
Sacred Heart University’s Isabelle Farrington College of Education recently became the new host university for the 15-year-old Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision.
The journal is a publication of the North Atlantic Regional Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, an organization geared to students, faculty and site supervisors in the counseling field. It presents work conducted by professionals in the Northeast, providing a comprehensive platform for research, theory and practices of counselor educators, counselor supervisors and professional counselors. New issues appear online quarterly in February, May, August and November. The target audience comprises counselors, educators and faculty members who operate or work with counselor training programs.
Associate professor Franc Hudspeth, director of SHU’s master’s in clinical mental health counseling program, is the journal’s editor-in-chief, a role he has filled for more than three years (during which time, Western Connecticut State University was its host). As editor, Hudspeth reads journal submissions, provides feedback to authors and decides what will be published.
“The journal chronicles current issues, concerns and potential solutions that enable counselors to continue to grow and develop as practitioners, educators and human beings,” Hudspeth said. “It contains high-quality articles that have undergone a thorough and extensive, double-blind, peer review.”
The number of submitted research papers has increased over the years, he said, prompting an increase in publication from its original, twice-yearly schedule.
Sacred Heart was chosen as the new host university from an array of elite colleges, which Hudspeth believes is due to SHU’s counseling program and the fact he works at SHU and could ensure a smooth transition without disruption to the editorial staff, reviewers and authors. Plus the University’s mission aligns with the journal’s aims: to educate, help others and promote the common good of society. SHU’s mission “embraces a vision for social justice and educates students in mind, body and spirit to prepare them personally and professionally to make a difference in the global community.”
Hudspeth said the journal’s move to SHU is another example of the University’s growth. It now has a place in the counseling and mental health world, and he is excited to develop that relationship, he said.
