Sacred Heart University poll reveals widespread trust in Pope Leo and optimism for the future of the papacy

Pope Leo with the vatican crest and his signatureA new national poll conducted by Sacred Heart University and GreatBlue Research reveals that more than two-thirds of Americans view Pope Leo XIV favorably, with nearly 90% of Catholics expressing trust in Church leadership.

The poll highlights a moment of optimism for the Catholic Church. Nearly two-thirds of Americans have a favorable view of the Church, and over 60% want Pope Leo to visit the U.S. in the next one to two years.

“This is a moment of opportunity for the papacy and Catholicism,” said Daniel Rober, associate professor of Catholic studies at SHU. “Pope Leo is seen not just as a religious figure, but as a figure representing Americans and their values globally during a period of upheaval at home.”

Key Findings

  • Over 80% of Americans are aware of Pope Leo’s ascension
  • More than 60% of Catholics engage with Catholic news regularly
  • One-third of respondents want the pope to speak on U.S. political issues like immigration, climate change and gun violence
  • Young adults are especially engaged, with over 50% interested in attending a papal visit
  • The poll also shows strong interest in digital engagement, with over half of respondents open to following the pope on social media, and over a third saying social media content is making him more relatable

“The poll affirms Gen Z’s desire for authentic moral leadership especially regarding issues of social justice, and many see Pope Leo as that leader,” said Michelle Loris, professor, associate dean and director of the Center for Catholic Studies.
