Here’s how firsthand experience brings your choice into focus

Key Highlights

  • An in-person campus visit reveals student life, academics, housing, dining and support resources you can’t fully see anywhere else
  • Touring a college helps students evaluate campus culture, daily routines, learning spaces and off-campus surroundings firsthand
  • Seeing a college in person builds confidence, clarifies fit and helps students make informed enrollment decisions

When you are choosing where to go to college, there is plenty of information to help you decide. Websites. Rankings. Videos. Social media posts.

But if you want a real sense of what life will feel like while at a particular college, visit the campus. Here are seven reasons touching ground at your future alma mater can make all the difference.

1. You’ll Feel the Vibe for Yourself

Photos and videos help, but nothing replaces being there. Full immersion brings on the vibes, and this “vibe check” is huge. Can you picture yourself here for the next four years?

Every college has a unique personality. Do you feel welcome? Does the energy feel right for you? Feeling comfortable in your surroundings can make or break your college experience.

2. You’ll See How Learning Happens

Brochures can offer promises about stellar academics, but touring the actual classrooms, labs, libraries, studios and buildings will let you see those promises in action. If you know your major or area of interest, check out the facilities and resources that you’ll use as a student.

3. You’ll Meet Future Classmates

At Sacred Heart University, student ambassadors lead the tours, offering information and insights beyond brochures and FAQs. You may learn why they chose SHU, what they love about being a Pioneer and insider tips on how to make the best of your college years.

You’ll likely see students in their natural habitat—going to class, grabbing a bite, socializing, shopping in the bookstore, studying and even playing pickleball. These scenes offer a glimpse of everyday student life.

4. You’ll Check Out Dorms, Dining and Daily Life

You’ll need a space to settle in, study and sleep. Your dorm room will be a key place to start building friendships in moments big and small. As you tour the dorms, check out the rooms and common spaces. Ask about the laundry, bathrooms and safety measures. How far to food and classes? Could you live there?

Where will you eat? Get a sense of dining options, meal plans and campus food culture, as well as how the school caters to different tastes and diets, early morning hunger, late-night cravings and everything in between. What about unique offerings? Maybe the campus boasts a ‘50s-style diner! And maybe it’s the only on-campus diner in New England. Just saying.

5. You’ll Discover Where Students Go When They Need Help—Or a Reset

See who will have your back, including the academic advisers, mental health counselors, career coaches and tutors who will support you along the way. Learn about peer organizations that have their eye on undergraduate needs and explore places such as fitness facilities and cultural centers that will enrich your college experience.

Seeing these resources in person—and learning how easy they are to access—can help you evaluate how the university supports undergraduate students inside and outside the classroom.

6. You’ll Learn About Life Beyond Campus

On SHU tours, you’ll learn about the surrounding community of Fairfield, which features beaches, open space and cultural hubs, a vibrant downtown, numerous shopping areas, many restaurants and easy access to transit. Understanding the local community can help you decide whether the location fits your lifestyle and interests, on and off campus.

Save time to explore neighborhoods, downtown or historic areas, parks or other hot spots located near campus. During your campus tour, ask about what students do off campus and how they get there. Ask about transit, cars and getting around.

7. You’ll Know to Trust Your Gut and Make the Call

A college visit can help to make the decision less challenging, more exciting and set you up for an unforgettable four years. Visiting a college helps you compare schools more easily and confirm your top choice.

Many SHU alumni describe choosing SHU once they experienced it in person—because it just felt right. For many, that feeling seals the deal.
